Freedom used to be part of another town called Effingham. It was known as "North Effingham." New settlers from Maine moved into the area. They had different ideas about culture and religion than the people already living in Effingham.
Because of these differences, North Effingham decided to become its own town. In 1831, it officially separated from Effingham. The community was named "Freedom" to celebrate this new independence.
