The Ossipee River is a cool river in the eastern part of New Hampshire and western Maine, in the United States. It's about 18.3-mile-long (29.5 km), which is like running a half-marathon! This river is a branch of the Saco River. The Saco River then flows all the way southeast to the big Atlantic Ocean near Saco, Maine.

Where Does the Ossipee River Start?

The Ossipee River starts its journey in a village called Effingham Falls, New Hampshire. It flows out of Berry Bay. Berry Bay is the last in a series of lakes connected to the larger Ossipee Lake.

River's Path Through Towns

As the river flows east, it acts like a natural border. First, it separates the towns of Effingham and Freedom in New Hampshire.

When the Ossipee River enters Maine, it keeps forming boundaries. It flows between Porter and Parsonsfield. Then, it continues between Hiram and Cornish.

The river also marks the line between two counties in Maine. York County is to the south, and Oxford County is to the north.

Communities Along the River

One important community along the river is Kezar Falls. This village is part of the town of Porter. At Kezar Falls, you can see two dams that hold back the river's water.

Following the River's Flow

If you want to follow the Ossipee River, you can drive along Route 25. This road, known as New Hampshire Route 25 and Maine State Route 25, travels right beside the river for its entire length. It's a great way to see the river's journey!
