Eaton became an official town in 1766. This happened when Governor Benning Wentworth, who was in charge of the colony, signed the papers. The town was named after Governor Theophilus Eaton of Connecticut. He was a very helpful person who gave money to help settle Massachusetts in 1630. Later, he helped start a colony in New Haven, Connecticut.
