Christopher Joseph Gallant III (born November 14, 1991), known as Gallant, is an American singer and songwriter. He was born in Washington, D.C.. Gallant is famous for his unique R&B music style. He became well-known after releasing his first EP, Zebra, in 2014. An EP is a "Extended Play" record, which has more songs than a single but fewer than a full album.

His first full album, Ology, came out in 2016. This album was a big hit and even got him a nomination for a Grammy Award. Gallant is signed with Mind of a Genius Records and Warner Bros. Records.

Early Life and Education

Gallant was born in Washington, D.C.. When he was young, his family moved to Columbia, Maryland. He went to Atholton High School there.

He started recording songs when he was in middle school. He was first inspired by R&B artists. Later, he also enjoyed alternative rock music as he grew up. In 2013, he graduated from New York University. He studied music at the Gallatin School of Individualized Study.

Music Career

Starting Out and Zebra

In 2013, Gallant moved to Los Angeles, California. He wanted to focus on his music career there.

In 2014, he released his first EP, Zebra. He described this EP as a "sonic diary." It was about his experiences after living in New York.

In 2015, his song "Weight in Gold" became very popular. Zane Lowe played it on Beats1 radio. That same year, Gallant went on tour with Sufjan Stevens. They performed 18 shows across North America.

After this, Spotify named Gallant as one of 15 artists to watch in 2016. He also sang on "Testarossa Music" by Zhu. Gallant also opened for Zhu's "Neon City" tour. This tour started at the Coachella festival.

On February 5, 2016, Gallant released "Skipping Stones" with Jhené Aiko. The song showed off Gallant's special high-pitched singing style. It also featured Jhené Aiko's calm vocals.

Gallant performed at Coachella in 2016. Billboard magazine called his performance the best moment of the festival. During his show, Seal made a surprise appearance. They sang Seal's song "Crazy" and Gallant's "Weight in Gold." The next weekend, Jhené Aiko joined him to sing "Skipping Stones."

In the Room Series

In 2016, Gallant started a special online series called In the Room. In this series, he invited other artists to perform with him.

The first episode featured Sufjan Stevens. They sang Stevens' song "Blue Bucket of Gold." For the second episode, Gallant sang "Weight in Gold" with Seal. Seal even said he was Gallant's biggest fan!

Later, Gallant collaborated with Jack Garratt and John Legend. He also performed with Andra Day and Dua Lipa. Gallant said the series was a way to honor artists who inspired him. It was also a chance to create something new with them.

Ology Album Success

Gallant's first full album, Ology, came out on April 6, 2016. It was released by Mind of a Genius Records. The album received great reviews from music critics.

Pitchfork gave it a high rating. The Guardian said, "If this is what R&B’s future looks like it’s brighter than ever." Entertainment Weekly also named Ology one of the best albums of 2016. People praised the album for its unique sound, voice, and lyrics.

On May 12, 2016, Gallant performed on national television for the first time. He sang "Weight in Gold" on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The audience gave him a standing ovation. Fallon praised his performance, saying, "Watch out for this guy [GALLANT]!"

In September 2016, Gallant performed on the BBC show Later... with Jools Holland. He also performed "Weight in Gold" at the 2016 Mnet Asian Music Awards in South Korea.

In January 2017, he was named Elvis Duran's Artist of the Month. He performed "Weight in Gold" live on NBC's Today show. Later that month, he released "Cave Me In" with Epik High's Tablo and Eric Nam. In spring 2017, he opened for John Legend's Darkness and Light tour.

Recent Music

On January 25, 2019, Gallant released his second album, Sweet Insomnia. This album featured other artists like Sabrina Claudio and 6lack.

On March 26, 2021, Gallant released his second EP, Neptune. It included collaborations with Brandy, Arin Ray, and the R&B duo VanJess.

On November 17, 2023, Gallant teamed up with Terrace Martin to form a new project called sneek. This project mixes soul and jazz music.

Gallant also announced a new album called Zinc.. He released singles like Coldstar. and Fly on the Wall. in 2024. He describes this new album as having a more alternative/indie sound.
