Game pie is a special kind of meat pie. It is made using game meat. Game refers to wild animals and birds that are hunted for food.
People have been making game pies since the time of the Roman Empire. Back then, and even today, these pies often include wild birds like partridge and pheasant. They also use animals such as deer and hare.
In the 18th century, especially in England, game pies became very fancy. Cooks created difficult recipes and used special moulds and dishes to serve them. Today's game pies are usually simpler. They still use meats like rabbit, venison, pigeon, and pheasant.
A Famous Game Pie
One very famous game pie is called the Oreiller de la Belle Aurore. This name means "Pillow of the Beautiful Aurore." It was named after Claudine-Aurore Récamier. She was the mother of a famous food writer named Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin.
This pie was one of Brillat-Savarin's favorite meals. It is a very large, square pie. It has many different ingredients inside. These include various game birds and their livers. It also contains veal, pork, truffles, and aspic. All these ingredients are baked inside a puff pastry crust.
The Oreiller de la Belle Aurore is described in a well-known food encyclopedia. This book is called the Larousse Gastronomique. It is one of three special pies named after people from Brillat-Savarin's hometown of Belley.
