Gatineau Hills facts for kids
The Gatineau Hills (French: Collines de la Gatineau) are a special group of hills in Canada. They are part of the southern edge of the Canadian Shield, which is a very old and large rocky area. These hills also form the northern side of the Ottawa Valley. They are like the first hills of the Laurentian Mountains, which stretch far to the east through Quebec.

Geology of the Gatineau Hills
The land around Gatineau Park is very interesting. It includes the Eardley Escarpment, which is a long fault line. A fault line is like a big crack in the Earth's crust. This fault line runs along the southern edge of the hills.
The Eardley Escarpment is a great spot for rock climbing and hiking. From here, you can see amazing views of the flat fields below. These fields stretch all the way to the Ottawa River. The Eardley Escarpment is part of a larger area called the Ottawa-Bonnechere Graben. This graben is an ancient rift valley, which means it was formed when the Earth's crust pulled apart a very long time ago.
History of the Gatineau Hills
People have lived in the Ottawa Valley for a very long time. The Algonquin people settled here over 4,000 years ago. Later, in the early 1600s, French explorers arrived in the area.
In the early 1800s, the large pine forests in the Gatineau Hills were cut down for wood. Many roads were built to help with mining and farming. However, people soon became worried about all the trees being cut down. Records show that people wanted to create a wilderness park in the Gatineau Hills as early as 1903. Over many years, different plans and actions were taken to protect this beautiful area. This is how it became the protected park we see today.
Tourism and Activities
The Gatineau Hills are a very popular place for visitors. They are especially famous for skiing. Many people from nearby Ottawa, Ontario, and Gatineau, Quebec, come here to ski.
Skiing and Winter Sports
Gatineau Park has over 190 kilometers of trails for cross-country skiing. It also hosts a big competition each year called the Gatineau Loppet. If you prefer downhill skiing, there are several places to go. These include Camp Fortune, Mont Cascades, Mont Ste. Marie, Edelweiss, and Vorlage. While these hills are smaller than some famous ski areas like Mont Tremblant or Mont-Sainte-Anne, they offer great fun for skiers.
Other Attractions
The hills are also important for communication. Ryan Tower, a tall communications tower at Camp Fortune, sends out many TV and radio signals for the area.
The Gatineau Hills are a major tourist spot, especially in October. This is when the leaves on the trees change to beautiful colors. Many visitors enjoy taking photographs and buying paintings of the colorful scenery.
The Gatineau Hills are located within the city of Gatineau. They are also found in the Les Collines-de-l'Outaouais Regional County Municipality in Quebec.
