Gebze (pronounced GEB-zeh) is a city and a special kind of district in Kocaeli Province, Turkey. It used to be called Libyssa a long time ago. Gebze covers an area of 418 square kilometers and had a population of 407,019 people in 2022.
This city is located about 65 kilometers (30 miles) southeast of Istanbul. It sits right on the Gulf of Izmit, which is an arm of the Sea of Marmara. Gebze is actually the largest district in Kocaeli Province when it comes to how many people live there. It even has more people than İzmit, which is the main city of the province.
Where is Gebze Located?
The district of Gebze is in the western part of Kocaeli Province. It has several neighbors around it. To the east, you'll find Körfez. To the northwest, west, and north, it borders parts of Istanbul like Pendik, Tuzla, and Şile. To the southwest, it's next to Çayırova and Darıca. Finally, to the southeast, you'll find Dilovası.

Getting Around Gebze
Gebze is an important place for transportation. The northern end of the Osman Gazi Bridge is located here. This huge bridge is about 4 kilometers long. It crosses the Sea of Marmara, connecting two different points: Kababurun and Dilburnu.
The city is also getting its own subway system! The Gebze Metro started being built in 2018 and is expected to open in 2024. There's also a special train line called Marmaray. This line connects Gebze to the European side of Istanbul, making it easy to travel between continents.
