Georgetown is a small town in White County, Arkansas, in the United States. It's located in the southeastern part of the county, right next to the White River. Georgetown is a very old community. It was first settled in 1789, even before the United States bought the Louisiana Territory from France! This makes it the oldest place in Arkansas where people have lived continuously.

History
A Look Back at Georgetown's Past
Georgetown has a long and interesting history. It was founded in 1789, making it the oldest place in Arkansas where people have lived without interruption. Another early settlement, Arkansas Post, was started much earlier in 1686. However, that community disappeared after the American Civil War. The next oldest town in Arkansas after Georgetown is Batesville, which was founded about 21 years later.
The Great Flood of 1945
In 1945, the White River overflowed its banks and caused a big flood in Georgetown. This natural disaster had a major impact on the town. It even helped lead to the end of the Missouri and North Arkansas Railroad the next year. This railroad had been important for carrying people and goods since 1906, connecting places like Joplin, Missouri, to Helena, Arkansas.
