Graham McTavish (born January 4, 1961) is a Scottish actor and author. He is well-known for his roles in many popular movies and TV shows. Some of his most famous parts include Dwalin in The Hobbit film series and The Saint of Killers in the TV show Preacher.

He also played Dougal MacKenzie and William Buccleigh MacKenzie in the series Outlander. More recently, he was Harrold Westerling in the HBO series House of the Dragon. In video games, he is known as Zoran Lazarević in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Charlie Cutter in Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception.

In 2020, McTavish and his Outlander co-star Sam Heughan wrote a book called Clanlands: Whisky, Warfare, and a Scottish Adventure Like No Other. This book became a No. 1 bestseller on the New York Times list.

Graham McTavish's Early Life

Graham McTavish was born in Glasgow, Scotland. His parents were Alec and Ellen McTavish. His family was very interested in politics, so they often talked about it at home.

When Graham was a child, his family moved away from Glasgow. As an adult, he lived in places like Canada, the United States, and England before settling in New Zealand.

At school, Graham and a friend enjoyed writing and performing funny skits. This led to his drama teacher asking him to act in a play called The Rivals when the main actor got sick. He later studied English literature at Queen Mary University of London. This helped him act in many Shakespeare plays and start his professional acting career.

Graham McTavish's Acting Career

Graham McTavish began his acting career in theatre. He worked with famous repertory theatres in London's West End and at the Dundee Rep.

Television Roles

Graham McTavish's first TV role was in 1986 in a Walt Disney mini-series called Return to Treasure Island. He also appeared in Freedom Fighter in 1988.

In 1996, he was in the fantasy-adventure series Highlander. He also co-starred as Rengal in the TV film Merlin in 1998. Between 1998 and 1999, he appeared in several TV shows. These included the crime drama Taggart, medical drama Casualty, sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf, and police drama Heartbeat.

In 2005, McTavish played General Rapax in the mini-series Empire, which was about the rise of the Roman Empire. He also had a role in HBO's series Rome. He then had a regular role in the police drama The Bill.

In 2007, he appeared in many TV shows. These included Ghost Whisper: The Other Side, Jekyll, New Tricks, The Royal, Numb3rs, NCIS, and Cane. The next year, he joined the cast of Prison Break. He also guest-starred in Lost, Pushing Daisies, and CSI: Miami.

In 2010, McTavish played Russian foreign minister Mikhail Novakovich in the series 24. In 2013, he was cast as Dougal MacKenzie in the time-travel drama Outlander. This show is based on the popular books by Diana Gabaldon. McTavish played this role in the first two seasons.

In 2016, McTavish got the role of William Munny, the Saint of Killers in the drama Preacher. In 2019, he played Father Kinley in season four of the Netflix show Lucifer.

McTavish returned to Outlander in 2020. He made a surprise appearance as William Buccleigh MacKenzie, the son of Dougal MacKenzie. Later that year, he and Sam Heughan announced a travel documentary series called Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip with Sam and Graham. It premiered in 2021, and its second season explored McTavish's home in New Zealand.

In 2021, McTavish also joined the cast of Netflix's fantasy drama The Witcher. He plays the master spy Sigismund Dijkstra in the show.

Film Roles

Graham McTavish's first film role was in For Queen and Country in 1988. The next year, he had a small part in the comedy Erik the Viking. In 1996, he voiced a drunken weasel in Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. He also starred in a 1997 film version of Shakespeare's Macbeth.

In 2003, he played a submarine captain in Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. The next year, he was in the action-adventure film King Arthur. In 2008, McTavish starred with Sylvester Stallone in Rambo.

In 2010, McTavish had a supporting role in Disney's Secretariat, a film based on a true story about a famous racehorse. Between 2012 and 2014, he played the dwarf Dwalin in director Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy. In 2015, he played boxing trainer Tommy Holiday in Creed, which is part of the Rocky movie series.

In 2016, McTavish co-starred in Disney's The Finest Hours, a film about a brave Coast Guard rescue. In 2018, he had a cameo as King Atlan in the DC Comics film Aquaman.

McTavish is also working on his first movie as a director, called This Guest of Summer. He will also act in the film with other actors from Outlander and The Hobbit.

Graham McTavish has done a lot of voice work for animated shows, movies, and video games.

Animated Shows and Films

McTavish's first voice role was as Sebastian Shaw in the Marvel Comics series Wolverine and the X-Men. He also voiced the villain Loki in Hulk Versus and The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. In 2010, he was the main voice of Dante in Dante's Inferno: An Animated Epic.

From 2015 to 2017, he had a voice role in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He also appeared in Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness (2016). McTavish voiced Titus and Vernon in Transformers: Robots in Disguise. In 2017, he was the voice of Fergus McDuck, Scrooge McDuck's father, in DuckTales. He currently voices Dracula in the Netflix animated series Castlevania.

Video Games

McTavish's first video game voice role was in Killzone: Liberation (2006). In 2009, he voiced Commander Lucius in Shadow Complex and Archer in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. He also provided the voice and motion capture for Zoran Lazarević in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

The next year, he voiced Dante Alighieri in Dante's Inferno and Khan in Metro 2033. He also voiced the Decepticon Thundercracker in Transformers: War for Cybertron. In 2011, he voiced Joseph Bertrand III in Infamous 2. He also provided the voice and motion capture for Charlie Cutter in Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. He played this role again in Uncharted 4: A Thief's End in 2016.

Graham McTavish as an Author

In 2020, Graham McTavish and his Outlander co-star Sam Heughan wrote a book together. It is called Clanlands: Whisky, Warfare, and a Scottish Adventure Like No Other. The book was inspired by their TV show Men in Kilts.

Clanlands became a huge success. It reached the #1 spot on the New York Times Best Seller Lists for both hardcover and e-book nonfiction. It also topped other bestseller lists.

In April 2015, McTavish was the main leader of New York City's Tartan Day Parade.

Graham McTavish's Personal Life

Graham McTavish was married to New Zealand filmmaker Gwen Isaac. They have two children together. They used to live in Central Otago, New Zealand.

In January 2023, McTavish married Garance Doré at Borthwick Castle in Scotland.
