Grand Coulee is a small city in Grant County, Washington, United States. It's known for being very close to the famous Grand Coulee Dam. In 2020, about 972 people lived there.

A Look at Grand Coulee's History

Grand Coulee became an official city on November 6, 1935. It is located right above the huge Grand Coulee Dam and next to the North Dam.

A famous scientist named John Abelson, who studied tiny parts of living things (molecular biology), was born in Grand Coulee in 1938.

Grand Coulee is found at these coordinates: 47°56′23″N 119°0′6″W / 47.93972°N 119.00167°W / 47.93972; -119.00167.

The city covers about 1.29 square miles (3.34 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

Grand Coulee sits at the northern end of a large canyon-like area also called the Grand Coulee. The city is about 1,483 feet (452 meters) above sea level. The canyon walls rise even higher to over 2,300 feet (700 meters) just south of the city.

The land slopes down about 200 feet (61 meters) from the city to the shore of Crescent Bay and Lake Roosevelt, which are just to the east.

Two other towns are nearby: Electric City is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) southwest, and Coulee Dam is about three miles (4.8 km) north. These three cities are connected by Washington State Route 155. This road meets Washington State Route 174 in Grand Coulee.
