Electric City is a small town in Grant County, Washington. In 2020, about 956 people lived there. The town got its name because it is very close to the Grand Coulee Dam, a huge power source.

History of Electric City

Electric City was started in 1934. It was one of several towns built to house workers for the Grand Coulee Dam. President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited Electric City that same year. By August, 500 building plots were ready for the town.

Some of the first buildings in Electric City were moved from a nearby town called Osborne. Osborne was later covered by water when Franklin D. Roosevelt Lake formed after the dam was finished. A post office opened in Electric City in June 1935. A school followed about a year later.

Electric City officially became a city on August 4, 1950. This happened after people voted for it on July 8. The 1950 U.S. census counted 1,472 people in the area before the vote.
