Grayrigg is a small village located in the South Lakeland area of Cumbria, England. It's a quiet place with a population of about 242 people, according to the 2011 census. Grayrigg is found about 4.9 miles (8 km) northeast of Kendal. It sits on hilly land, near the West Coast Main Line railway and the M6 motorway.

A Glimpse into Grayrigg's Past
Grayrigg has a long history! It was once part of a historic area called Westmorland. People have found signs of an ancient Roman camp in Grayrigg and the land around it. This shows that people lived here a very long time ago.
During the Middle Ages, Grayrigg was a small community. It had a special chapel dedicated to St John the Evangelist. This chapel is still used today, connecting the village to its past.
Major Train Accidents in Grayrigg
Grayrigg is known for two serious train accidents that happened nearby. These events are an important part of the village's recent history.
1947 Train Collision
On May 18, 1947, a train from Glasgow Central was heading to London Euston. It was a very long train with 13 carriages. This train did not stop at the signals near Lambrigg Crossing. It then crashed into another locomotive. Sadly, 33 people were hurt in this accident, and three of them were seriously injured.
2007 Grayrigg Derailment
On February 23, 2007, another serious train accident happened near Grayrigg. This time, it was at Lambrigg Crossovers, just south of the village. A Virgin Trains West Coast service, also traveling from London Euston to Glasgow Central, went off the tracks. This type of accident is called a derailment. Sadly, one passenger died in this incident.
