History of Green City
Green started as a "township" in 1809. A township is a type of local government area. It was first part of Stark County. Later, in 1840, it became part of Summit County.
Green Township had several small, unnamed communities called "hamlets." The most well-known was Greensburg. By 1900, there were five such settlements. These were surrounded by farms and areas where coal could be found.
Over time, Green's economy changed. It moved from mostly farming to more businesses and factories. By the 1950s, farmers began selling their land. This land was then used to build homes.
As more people moved in, the community grew. People started talking about Green becoming a city. In 1991, voters agreed to combine the small village with the rest of the township. This made Green an official "village." In 1992, Green was officially named a "city." John Torok became its first mayor.
Green also had a disagreement about the NEXUS Pipeline. This pipeline was planned to run near homes, important wetlands, and Comet Lake Dam. Construction began in 2018.
The Flag of Green
The flag of Green was designed through a contest for school-aged children. Two students, Matt Pitzo and Justin Callahan, had similar designs. Their ideas were combined to create the final flag.
The city's motto is: "A township from the past, a city of the future." Carrie West created this motto. You can see the flag at several places in Green. These include the Central Administration Building, Boettler Park, and Akron General.
Understanding Roundabouts
In 2009, Green opened the first two-lane roundabout in Summit County. A roundabout is a circular intersection. Cars drive around a central island instead of stopping at traffic lights. This helps traffic flow smoothly.
As of 2024, Green has 11 roundabouts. Six of these are located along State Route 241.
