History of Green Township

Green Township became an official township on December 27, 1824. This happened when parts of two other townships, Hardwick and Independence, were joined together. The township was named after Ephraim Green, who settled in the area around 1770.

Over the years, the township's borders changed a few times.

  • In 1829, some land was given to Byram Township.
  • In 1853, Green Township gained land from the old Newtown Township.
  • In 1904, a new township called Fredon Township was created from part of Green Township.

Today, Green Township covers about 16.5 square miles (42.7 square kilometers). Many smaller communities within Green Township have their own special names. These include Tranquility, Huntsville, Greendell, and Yellow Frame.

The Story of Tranquility

The area known as Tranquility was first called Kennedytown. It was named after Amos Kennedy, an early settler. When people wanted to build a Methodist church, there was a disagreement. Some wanted it in Allamuchy Township, and others in Kennedytown.

They decided to build the church halfway between the two places. To remember this peaceful agreement, they named the church "Tranquility." Later, Kennedytown adopted the church's name and became known as Tranquility.

Railroad History

In 1911, a train line called the Lackawanna Cut-off opened. It ran through Green Township and had a stop at Greendell station. This line was a main route for the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad. It connected Hoboken to Buffalo.

The train line stopped being used in 1980, and the tracks were removed in 1984. Today, there are plans to bring passenger train service back to this line. The old station building at Greendell might be used again.
