History of Greenwood Village
The city gets its name from the Greenwood Ranch. In the 1860s, people came from the East and Midwest. They were looking for gold in this area.
By the early 1900s, the area had become a place for farming. Greenwood Village officially became a city in 1950. In the 1970s, the city started to grow very fast. This was because of the Denver Technological Center (DTC).
The mayor at the time, Freda Poundstone, worked to stop the nearby city of Denver from taking more land for the Tech Center. This led to something called the "Poundstone Amendment" in 1974. This rule stopped Denver's city limits from growing further. It allowed Greenwood Village to add important properties along the I-25 highway.
This change made some people in Arapahoe County upset. They were losing tax money because Greenwood Village was growing. This led to the creation of Centennial as a new city in 2001. Now, Greenwood Village is surrounded by Centennial. The city has even given up some land a few times, which is called "deannexation." This happened in 1985, 2011, and 2024.
