Harper's Ferry flintlock pistol facts for kids
The Model 1805 Harper's Ferry flintlock pistol was an important handgun made in the United States. It was built at the Harpers Ferry Armory in Virginia (which is now West Virginia). This pistol was special because it was the very first pistol ever made by an American national armory! It became the main handgun for US dragoons (soldiers on horseback) during the War of 1812.

What Made It Special?
The Model 1805 pistol was also called a "horse pistol" because it was used by soldiers on horseback. Its design was inspired by a French pistol from 1798. The pistols made from 1805 to 1808 were all very similar.
This pistol was a .54 caliber weapon. This means the bullet was about half an inch wide. It was a single-shot pistol, so you could only fire it once before reloading. It also had a smoothbore barrel, meaning the inside of the barrel was smooth, not grooved. This type of pistol used a flintlock mechanism to fire.
Pistols made for officers looked like the regular ones but sometimes had fancy decorations. They might even have a rifled barrel, which made them more accurate.
Why Soldiers Carried Two Pistols
These "horsemen's pistols" were usually given out in pairs. Both pistols in a pair would have the same serial number. Since you could only fire one shot before reloading, carrying two pistols meant a soldier had two shots ready quickly. Soldiers also carried special holsters on their saddles for these pistols.
Records show that about 4,096 of these pistols were made at the Harper's Ferry Armory. Today, only about 200 to 300 of them are still known to exist.
The War of 1812 and Beyond
During the War of 1812, the Model 1805 pistol was given to American cavalry soldiers. Because many weapons were needed, other states like Pennsylvania and Connecticut started making similar pistols. Some of these new versions even had improvements, like metal ramrods instead of wooden ones.
Andrew Jackson, who later became president, liked the Model 1805 pistol throughout his military career. He even used a pair of these pistols in a famous duel in 1806.
Later Versions of the Pistol
Over the years, improved versions of the Harper's Ferry flintlock pistol were made in 1812, 1818, and 1835. These newer pistols were the first standard pistols given to the US Marshals after the War of 1812. They were also used by the Texas Rangers before the Texas Revolution.
A version of the 1835 pistol was later changed to use a caplock firing system. These were given to the US Cavalry during the Seminole Wars and the Mexican–American War. They were used until the Colt Dragoon revolver (a pistol that could fire multiple shots without reloading) came out in 1847.
The very last Harper's Ferry pistol was the Model 1855. It was a .58 caliber handgun with a special detachable shoulder stock. This stock allowed soldiers to hold it like a small rifle. It was designed for US dragoons during the American Indian Wars.
Famous Users and the Civil War
Harper's Ferry pistols were popular with gunfighters and mountain men in the early days of the Old West. Famous figures like Kit Carson used them. Many of these pistols were also given to the Confederate army during the American Civil War. For example, Lawrence O'Bryan Branch was carrying a pair of Model 1835 pistols when he was killed in 1862.
Modern Use and Reproductions
Today, you can find new versions of the original Harper's Ferry pistols. These modern reproductions often have a larger caliber than the old ones. They also usually have a rifled bore, which makes them more accurate for shooting. There is also one reproduction that is like the percussion-converted pistols, and it has the correct .54 caliber smooth bore.
The Model 1805 Harper's Ferry flintlock pistol is still important today. It is featured on the official symbol (insignia) of the U.S. Army Military Police Corps.
