History of Harpersfield
The town of Harpersfield was first created in 1768. It was founded by Colonel John Harper, who was an important figure. He fought for the state of New York during the American Revolutionary War.
Geography of Harpersfield
Harpersfield is located in a unique spot. Its northern border touches Otsego County. The northeastern part of the town shares a border with Schoharie County. The village of Stamford is also right on the town's southeastern edge.
The town covers a total area of about 109.5 square kilometers (42.3 square miles). Most of this area, about 108.8 square kilometers (42.0 square miles), is land. Only a small part, about 0.7 square kilometers (0.27 square miles), is water.
The northern three-quarters of Harpersfield has water that flows westward. This water goes into Charlotte Creek and other small streams. These streams then lead to the Susquehanna River near Oneonta. The rest of the town's water flows south. It drains into the West Branch Delaware River, which forms the southern border of the town.
