A Look at Hart's History
People have lived in the Hart area for a very long time. We know this from signs of life dating back to 6000 BC! Around 3500 BC, farming began to appear here. By 1000 BC, more people had settled, building farms and creating fields.
Things got busier around 650 AD when St Hilda's Monastery was built in nearby Hartlepool. However, Vikings attacked and destroyed the monastery in the 9th and 10th centuries. Even after that, Viking leaders continued to live in Hart.
Who Ruled Hart?
Around 1119, a powerful family called the de Brus family took control of the area. But in 1306, control passed to the Clifford family. This happened after Robert de Brus VII tried to become the King of Scotland.
Tough Times in Hart
In 1587, a serious illness called the plague affected the village. Records show that 89 people were buried during this time. In 1652, something unusual happened when John Pasmore was buried. The records mention a star appearing and the sun being eclipsed.
In the past, some women in Hart were accused of being witches. For example, in 1596, Ellen Thompson was accused and buried near St Mary Magdalene Church. Other women, like Helen de Inferno (in 1454) and Alison Lawe (in 1582), also faced similar accusations.
A famous Jesuit named Thomas Ellerker was born in Hart in 1738.
Modern Day Decisions
In May 2021, the local village council of Hart made a big decision. They, along with the councils of nearby villages like Elwick, Dalton Piercy, and Greatham, said they no longer trusted the Hartlepool Borough Council. They wanted to rejoin County Durham instead.
Hart's Manor House and Church
In the late 1100s, the de Brus family built a manor house and a small chapel in Hart. This chapel is now the main part of the St Mary Magdalene Church.
Changes in Ownership
After Robert Brus VII tried to become King of Scotland in 1306, the English authorities took the manor farm from his family. They gave it to the Clifford family. The Cliffords owned it until 1586, when they sold it to John Lord Lumley. Later, in 1770, Sir George Pocock bought it.
In 1830, the estate went to William Henry, Duke of Cleveland. His family, the Milbanks, owned the manor until at least 1928. Today, only a small part of the original manor house can still be seen. This includes a wall from the 1700s and a section of a wall from the 1300s. This older wall is a special protected historical site.
St Mary Magdalene Church
The St Mary Magdalene Church was built during the Norman period. This means it is very old! It is listed as a Grade I building, which means it is very important historically and architecturally. The church has been changed a lot over the years. One cool feature is a carving of St George and the Dragon on its outside south wall. As of 2017, it is a Church of England parish church, part of the Durham Diocese.
Hart Bog: A Special Place
Just outside the village, you'll find Hart Bog. A bog is a type of wetland with lots of moss and peat. This bog is a very important natural area. It is on the List of Sites of Special Scientific Interest. This means it's a protected area because of its unique plants, animals, or geology.
Hart's Climate
The climate in Hart is quite mild. There aren't huge differences between the highest and lowest temperatures. It also gets enough rain throughout the year. This type of weather is known as a "Marine West Coast Climate" or "Oceanic climate." It's common in areas near the ocean.
