Hayden is a town in Routt County, Colorado, USA. It's a special kind of town called a "home rule municipality." In 2020, about 1,941 people lived there. Hayden is part of the larger Steamboat Springs area.
The town is located along U.S. Highway 40, in the Yampa River Valley. It sits between the towns of Craig and Steamboat Springs. Hayden is also very close to the Yampa Valley Regional Airport. This airport offers regular passenger jet service. It's quite unique for such a small town to have this kind of service. Major airlines like American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines fly there.

Hayden's History
Before Hayden became a town, the Ute people used this area. They came here for summer hunting trips. In the early 1800s, trappers also worked in the region.
The first settlers arrived in 1875. The town was officially established in 1894. It became an incorporated town in 1906. Hayden was named after F.V. Hayden. He led a survey team for the U.S. Geological & Geographic Survey. This was back in the late 1860s. Hayden explored western Colorado during the late 1800s.
The Denver and Salt Lake Railway reached Hayden by 1916. This train line is still used today. It is now part of the Union Pacific Railroad.
Historically, Hayden was a center for coal mining and agriculture. Today, it is a small community. It has a few homes and businesses.

Hayden has a type of weather called a Humid continental climate. This means it has warm summers and cold winters. Winters usually bring a lot of snow. Precipitation, like rain and snow, is spread out evenly all year. The time when plants can grow without frost is short. It averages about 107 days.

Hayden has been home to some interesting people:
- Earl Bascom (1906-1995) - He was a Hollywood actor and artist. He was also a sculptor and an inventor. Earl was a pioneer in rodeo. He lived and worked as a cowboy in Hayden in the 1930s.
- Frank Tenney Johnson (1874-1939) - He was a famous painter. He painted scenes of the Old American West. He was known for his special "moonlight painting" technique. Frank worked on the Lazy 7 Ranch in Hayden.
