Highvale's Location and Landscape
Highvale is a beautiful area where the South Pine River begins. This means it's where the small streams that form the river first start flowing.
To the north and west, the land goes up really high. It's part of the D'Aguilar Range, with some spots over 500 meters (about 1,640 feet) above sea level. Highvale sits right at the bottom of two well-known mountains: Mount Nebo and Mount Glorious.
The land in Highvale is used for a mix of things. Many people live in homes with plenty of space. Some areas are also used for grazing animals, like cattle, on the natural plants. The very steep parts of the D'Aguilar Range are mostly left untouched.
A Look at Highvale's Past
Highvale was first called Highlands. This name came from a large property called "The Highlands." It was a special dairy farm.
In 1919, the Queensland Government bought this land. They wanted to turn it into banana farms for soldiers returning from war. This was part of a plan called a soldier settlement, which helped soldiers get land and start new lives.
In 1924, the Postmaster-General's Department wanted to put in telephone lines. But they found out there was already another place called Highlands. So, they chose the name Highvale instead.
Highvale's Old School
Highlands State School opened its doors on February 7, 1921. It was later renamed Highvale State School in 1943. The school closed on January 29, 1968. It was located at 876 Mount Glorious Road.
Community Groups
In 2015, the Samford Area Mens Shed opened. It's a place where men can meet, work on projects, and share skills. It's located at the entrance to the showgrounds.
