Theydon Garnon has a long history! Its name, "Theydon," might mean 'valley where thatch material grows'. "Garnon" comes from the Gernon family, who were important long ago.
Early Village Life
Back in 1305, Theydon Garnon was a busy place. It was allowed to have a weekly market and a yearly fair. Imagine all the people buying and selling goods! Around 1704, a workhouse opened here. This was a place where poor people could live and work.
Changes Over Time
By 1851, the village had grown quite a bit, with 1,237 people living there. The Epping Union Workhouse was in Theydon Garnon. Also, the Epping train station opened nearby in 1865. However, in 1896, parts of Theydon Garnon, like the village of Coopersale and hamlets such as Coopersale Street and Fiddler's Hamlet, became part of the new Epping Urban District. This made Theydon Garnon smaller, and by 1901, its population was 317.
