Discovering Theydon Mount's Past
The name "Theydon" likely means 'valley where thatch grows'. Thatch is a material used for roofs. The word "Mount" comes from the hill where the village is located.
In the past, Theydon Mount had different names. These names often came from the important families who owned the land. For example, it was once called Theydon Paulyn. Theydon Bois, Garnon, and Mount were all mentioned in the Domesday Book. This was a big survey of England made in 1086.

Theydon Mount is located close to the M25 motorway. This is a major road in England. The village and its surrounding area cover about 632 hectares. That's about 1,560 acres! In 2001, only 163 people lived here.
The parish includes a small group of houses called Mount End. Other nearby places include:

Important Buildings and Places
Hill Hall is a very old and important country house. It was built way back in 1557–1558. Sir Thomas Smith had it built for himself. Later, in the 1930s, a person named Lord Edward Hay lived there.
Theydon Mount also has a church called St Michael's Church. Sir William Smith finished building it in 1614. This church is also a Grade I listed building. The original church, St Michael and St Stephen, sadly burned down in 1611. There was once another building called Mount Hall near Hill Hall, but nothing is left of it today.
