Theydon Bois is a lovely village in Essex, England. It's part of the Epping Forest district. The village is about 1 mile (1.6 km) south of Epping. It's also 1 mile (1.6 km) northeast of Loughton. In 2011, about 4,062 people lived here.

Theydon Bois is located near the M25 motorway and the M11 motorway. You can get there by train using Theydon Bois tube station on the Central line. The village has one primary school, Theydon Bois County Primary School. It sits right next to the beautiful Epping Forest.

Village History

The name Theydon first appeared as Thecdene in 1062. This old name likely means 'valley where thatching materials are found'. The second part of the name, 'Bois', comes from the Bois family. They owned the main estate, called a manor, in the 1100s and 1200s. When the railway was built, a local clerk suggested spelling it 'Bois'. This was because of the village's closeness to the forest and his knowledge of French.

Theydon Hall is a historic building. It stands where the old manor house used to be. This hall was the main house for the area until the early 1600s. The old village church was also nearby. It was taken down in 1843.

The Famous Avenue of Trees

One of the most famous sights in Theydon Bois is the 'Avenue of Trees'. This is a long line of oak trees along Loughton Lane, a main road. These trees were planted in the 1830s. People say they were planted to celebrate Queen Victoria becoming queen. The City of London looks after these trees. They said the Theydon avenue is very important among all the tree avenues they care for.

Recently, a study found that some trees needed to be cut down. Others needed to be watched carefully. Even though cutting them was necessary, people in the village were worried. They thought it would change how the village looked. So, new trees were planted in late 2010. These new trees are set back from the old ones. The idea is that these new, growing trees will take over in the future. The village council chairman, Robert Glozier, said the Avenue of Trees is a key part of the village. He said it must be saved for a long time.

Some of the new trees have been sponsored by people. They are memorials to loved ones. Information about these trees will be put on a board near the avenue.

Fun Events in Theydon Bois

Theydon Bois has several fun events each year. One of the most popular is the annual Donkey Derby. This event usually happens in July. Kids can race donkeys, and people can place small bets on them. You can even sponsor a race or a donkey and name it! The day also has rides, games, stalls, and food. The money raised from the Donkey Derby helps the Theydon Bois Scouts and also the local Girl Guides.

Another yearly event is the Open Gardens Day. This happens in the summer. On this day, local people open their private gardens. Visitors from the village and outside can come and see them.
