History of Hof van Twente

Goor's Past

The town of Goor got its "city rights" in 1263. This meant it could govern itself more, like a city. However, it never grew into a very big or important city. In the Middle Ages, the "Drost" (a local ruler working for the bishop) lived in Goor.

Some castles were built around Goor. One important castle was built by the Heeckeren family in 1412. Goor also had a small port on the Regge river. In 1936, the Twente Canal opened, and a new industrial port was built there.

For many years, a factory in Goor used a material called asbestos. People used leftover asbestos to pave paths and roads. Later, it was discovered that small parts of asbestos could be harmful. So, in the 1990s, much of the soil in Goor had to be removed and cleaned or replaced.

Delden's Story

Delden received its city rights in 1333. Its center was round and surrounded by earthen walls. The town grew because of the Twickel castle, which is less than a mile north of Delden. This castle, which looks today mostly as it did in the 1600s, is still lived in by a noble family from Germany.

In 1886, people found salt deep underground near the castle. This led to salt mining, which is still happening in the nearby city of Hengelo.

Markelo's Ancient Finds

In Markelo, scientists have found and dug up prehistoric mounds called "tumuli". These mounds were used as graves a very long time ago.

What Hof van Twente Makes

Hof van Twente is located in the middle of the Overijssel province. It is southwest of Almelo and southeast of Rijssen-Holten.

The towns of Goor and Delden have some important industries. They produce things like cement, metal products, and plastics. Goor has a small port on the Twente Canal, which connects to other cities like Zutphen and Enschede. Permess International, a company in the area, makes special materials for the clothing industry.

The A35 motorway has an exit between Delden and Hengelo. This makes it easy to travel to and from these towns. Farming and tourism are also very important for the economy of Hof van Twente.

Railway Zutphen to Oldenzaal (line 73): Zutphen - Lochem - Goor (mun. Hof van Twente) - Delden (ditto) - Hengelo - Oldenzaal.
