History of Holywell Green
Holywell Green is a very old place. It was first written about in the Domesday book. This book was a big survey of England made in 1086. It said Holywell Green was a "small hamlet". A hamlet is a tiny village.
The village gets its name from a special place called St Helen's Well. This well was known in the area a long, long time ago. We are not sure exactly where the original well was located.
Geography of the Village
Holywell Green is the name for the eastern part of Stainland. It is built on a hill that faces east. The main roads are Stainland Road and Station Road. Today, Holywell Green and Stainland have grown together. This happened after new areas like West View and Bradley View were built.
Cool Places to Visit
Shaw Park: A Green Space
Shaw Park is the biggest park in the area. You can find the main entrance on Station Road. This park used to be the garden of a large house called Brooklands House. The house was taken down in 1930.
In 1955, a man named Raymond Shaw gave the garden to the local council. It then became a public park for everyone to enjoy. The park has many fun things. There's a playground for kids. There's also an astroturf pitch for 5-a-side football. You can find a well, a pretty lake, and a reed pond. The park also has arches and three interesting buildings called follies. Follies are buildings that look like old ruins but are built for decoration. These follies were built by John Shaw to keep birds.
You can get into the park from four different places. These are Shaw Lane (near Brooklands Avenue and Brooklands Close) and Station Road.
A group called the Shaw Park Restoration Group started in 2010. They want to make the park beautiful again. They are working to bring it "back to its former glory."
St Helen's Well: A Historic Spot
St Helen's Well is mentioned in an old book from 1775. This book was about the history of Halifax. The book says there was a chapel nearby that was turned into a house. Inside its walls was a large stone called "the Cross." People thought visitors to the well and cross were religious travelers.
We don't know the exact spot of the original well. A stone trough on Station Road is thought to be the traditional site. It says "Holy Well Improved 1843" on it. This well is now dry. It was fixed up in 1843. This might have been because people were becoming more interested in old wells.
In the late 1800s, the stone trough cracked and leaked. It was fixed again in 1977. However, some local historians think this stone trough is not the real well. They believe the true St Helen's Well is about one kilometer away. It's near Helen Hill Farm. A spring still flows there today.
Carr Hall Castle: A Famous Home
Carr Hall Castle is at the end of Shaw Lane. This castle won a TV show in 2008. It was called I Own Britain's Best Home on Channel 5.
Bradley Hall Golf Club: For Golf Lovers
If you go opposite Burrwood Way, you'll find the road to Bradley Hall Golf Club. The main building for the golf club is called Bradley Hall. The golf course stretches along the side of the hill below Stainland.
Bradley Hall itself is a very old building. It was built in the 1500s. A fire badly damaged it in 1629. Many local places are named after this hall. These include Bradley Court, Bradley Lane, and Bradley Farm.
Local Pubs and Restaurants
The Rock Hotel is at the bottom of Broad Carr Lane. It still has the original Rock Inn inside. This is the only pub left in the village now.
The Holy Well Inn used to be called the Station Hotel. Before that, it was the Waggon and Horses. It's at the corner of Stainland Road and Station Road. The pub closed in 2012. People living nearby worked hard to save it. They successfully got it listed as an "asset of community value." This means it's important to the community. In 2018, a local group bought the building. They plan to open it again as a place for everyone to gather.
Religion in Holywell Green
Between Chapel Close and Stainland Road, you will find the Stainland and Holywell Green United Reformed Church. There used to be another church here. It was taken down in the 1970s.
Community Life
Holywell Green has a Nisa Local shop. It's at the corner of Stainland Road and Chapel Street. Next to the shop is a place to do laundry. There is also a fish and chip shop. It's at the corner of Stainland Road and James Street.
Industry in the Area
There are two industrial parks on Burrwood Way. These are Burrwood Industrial Estate and Springwood Business Park.
Below Shaw Park, in the valley, are two chemical plants. One is Stainland Works. The other is Rhodia Chemical Plant. Stainland Works is partly built where the old train station used to be.
In the 1800s, there was a lot of industry in the valleys. Stainland Works is on the site of the old Brookroyd Mills. This mill employed over 1,200 people in 1857. Many of the houses in the village were built for these mill workers. Burrwood Mill is now apartments called Burrwood Court.
Education in Holywell Green
Holywell Green has one school. It is called Holywell Green Primary School. Children from 4 to 11 years old go to this school. It also has a nursery for younger children.
The school was built in 1915. But it has been made bigger many times. The buildings mix old Victorian style with modern designs. The school is next to Stainland Road. It has nice views of the nearby deer park and valley.
