Leavenheath is a village in Suffolk, England. It is very close to the border with Essex. You can find it on the A134 road, between the towns of Sudbury and Colchester. Leavenheath is part of the Babergh area.
The village is also a civil parish, which is a local government area. It includes two smaller areas called hamlets: Cock Street and Honey Tye. In 2011, about 1,370 people lived in Leavenheath.
The name Leavenheath comes from an old open area of land called Leaven Heath. This land was located between other villages like Boxford, Bures, Nayland, and Polstead.
Leavenheath is quite spread out and does not have one main village centre. It is split into two parts, about half a mile apart, by an area called Leaden Hall. The northern part is east of the A134 road, and the southern part is to the west.
For a long time, Leavenheath did not even have its own church. St Matthew's Church was built in 1836. It was first used as a "chapel of ease," which means it was a smaller church for people who lived far from the main parish church. Leavenheath did not become its own official parish until 1952. Before that, it was part of the Stoke by Nayland Parish.
Nature and Local Environment
The south-eastern part of Leavenheath parish is a beautiful area. It is part of the Dedham Vale AONB. This means the landscape is protected because of its special natural beauty.
In the south-west, you can find a part of the Arger Fen SSSI. An SSSI is a place that is important for its plants, animals, or geology.
To the east of the parish are The Carrs. These are four ponds that flow into the River Stour. Leavenhall Woods and Breach Grove are also special places. They are both protected nature reserves, which means they are kept safe for wildlife.
Local Government
Leavenheath has its own "electoral ward." This is an area used for local elections. The Leavenheath ward also includes the nearby village of Assington. In 2011, the total population of this electoral ward was 1,772 people.
