Boxford is a lovely village in Suffolk, England. It's in the Babergh area, about six miles east of Sudbury. The village is built near the River Box.

In 2021, about 833 people lived in the main part of Boxford. The wider area, called the parish, had about 1403 people. Boxford is surrounded by other villages like Assington and Polstead. It has many old and important buildings, with 87 of them being "listed." This means they are protected because of their history. Boxford became a special "conservation area" in 1973 to help protect its historic look.

History of Boxford

The name "Boxford" means "the ford where box trees grow." A ford is a shallow place in a river where you can cross.

Long ago, during the Middle Ages, Boxford was a busy wool town. This means that making and trading wool was a very important part of the village's economy.

How Boxford is Governed

Boxford is part of the Babergh area in Suffolk. It used to be part of the Cosford Rural District and then West Suffolk. Since 1974, it has been part of the non-metropolitan county of Suffolk.

There was an "electoral ward" (an area for voting) named Boxford until 2019. This ward included Boxford and stretched north to Milden. It had a total population of 2,170 people.

Boxford's International Friends

In 1975, people from Boxford, Massachusetts in the USA visited England. They were looking for the original Boxford that their town was named after. They decided that Boxford in Suffolk was likely the place!

Because of this, the people of Boxford, Suffolk, were invited to visit Boxford, MA, the next summer. This trip got a lot of attention! A newspaper called the Evening Standard showed photos of the villagers. A TV crew from the BBC Nationwide show even went with them.

On July 23, 1976, the villagers flew from London to Boston, USA. They stayed for two weeks with families in Boxford, MA. It was a big adventure!

Life and Businesses in Boxford

Boxford has two pubs: The Fleece and the White Hart. The Fleece is a very old building from the 16th century. It used to be a "coaching inn," where people traveling by coach could stop for the night.

The village also has a church called St Mary's. It's a very old and important building, listed as Grade I. There is also a primary school for younger children.

A business called Riddelsdell Brothers started in Boxford in 1900. It's thought to be the oldest working garage in Europe! Also, Copella fruit juices are made at orchards on the edge of Boxford.

Geography of Boxford

Boxford parish includes three smaller areas called hamlets. These are Stone Street, Calais Street, and Hagmore Green. Stone Street is south of the church, and Calais Street is to the east. These hamlets are very close to each other and are connected by roads and footpaths. Hagmore Green is southwest of Stone Street.

  • Hardiman Scott (1920–1999) was a journalist, broadcaster, and writer. He was the BBC's first political editor from 1970 to 1975.
