Building a Strong Hotel
A rich businessman from El Paso, Zack T. White, paid for the hotel to be built. He had seen another hotel in El Paso burn down. Because of this, White and the architect, Henry Charles Trost, visited San Francisco, California. They wanted to learn how some buildings there survived the big earthquake and fire in 1906.
The hotel cost $1.5 million to build. This made it one of the strongest buildings in El Paso. It was also one of the most beautiful. The hotel's large lobby has a stunning stained-glass dome. This dome is over 45 feet wide. It was made in the special Tiffany glass style.
A Place for History and Famous Guests
During the Mexican Revolution in 1914, people loved to watch battles. They would watch the revolutionaries fight the Mexican Army. They watched from the roof terraces of the hotel.
Many famous people have stayed at the hotel. This includes several U.S. Presidents. Among them were William Howard Taft, Herbert Hoover, and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Later presidents like Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush also visited.
Other well-known guests include movie stars like Gloria Swanson, Gregory Peck, Harrison Ford, Clark Gable, and John Wayne. Important figures like General John J. Pershing, Pancho Villa, Amelia Earhart, and Sandra Day O'Connor have also stayed here. Musicians like Enrico Caruso, U2, Van Halen, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, and The Rolling Stones have enjoyed the hotel. Even sports teams like the Dallas Cowboys and Golden State Warriors have been guests.
Hotel Ownership Changes
The hotel was sold many times over the years. In 1986, a new 17-story section was added to the north side. A Mexican hotel company, Camino Real Hotels, owned it for 30 years. They called it The Camino Real. In 2016, they sold the building to The Meyers Group.
The Meyers Group worked with a local partner, Two Sabes LLC. They renovated the hotel and gave it back its original name: Hotel Paso Del Norte.
