Huron is a small town located in Wayne County, New York, in the United States. In 2010, about 2,118 people lived there. The town gets its name from the Huron Native American tribe.

The Town of Huron is in the northeastern part of Wayne County. It is located east of the city of Rochester. There is also a smaller community, or hamlet, within the town that is also called Huron. The main offices for the town government are found near this hamlet, at a place called Rice Mill.

The Town of Huron does not have its own post office. Mail services for the area are handled by nearby towns. These include ZIP Code 14590 for Wolcott and ZIP Code 14516 for North Rose.

Exploring Huron's Past

The area that is now Huron was first settled around 1796. It was part of a large land deal known as the Pulteney Purchase.

How Huron Got Its Name

The Town of Huron was officially created in 1826. It was formed from a part of the Town of Wolcott. When it was first created, it was called the "Town of Port Bay." In 1834, the town's name was changed to honor the Huron tribe.

The Shaker Community in Huron

From 1826 to 1837, a special community of people called Shakers lived partly in the town. This community was known as Shaker Heights. The Shakers decided to move because they felt there were too many outside influences in Huron. They moved to the Town of Groveland and started a new community. This new place is now where the Groveland Correctional Facility is located.

Huron's Natural Landscape

The town of Huron covers a total area of about 43.2 square miles (111.9 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 39.5 square miles (102.3 square kilometers), is land. The remaining 3.7 square miles (9.6 square kilometers) is water.

Water Features

The northern border of the town is Lake Ontario, one of the Great Lakes. A very important natural feature in Huron is Sodus Bay. This is a large inlet of Lake Ontario that extends into the town.

Major Roads

New York State Route 104 is a main road that runs through the southern part of the town.

  • Bonnie Castle — A small community located on the eastern shore of Sodus Bay.
  • Charles Point — A series of land formations and islands that stretch from the mainland into Sodus Bay and Lake Ontario.
  • Chimney Bluffs State Park — A beautiful state park next to the northeast part of Sodus Bay. It's home to Chimney Bluff, which is 175 feet (about 53 meters) above Lake Ontario and is the highest point in Huron.
  • Eagle Island (also called "Big Island") — An island found in Sodus Bay, southwest of LeRoy Island.
  • East Bay — A smaller bay of Lake Ontario, located east of Sodus Bay.
  • East Bay Park — A hamlet located near the shore of Lake Ontario, on the western side of East Bay.
  • Furnace Village — A hamlet located at the eastern edge of the town.
  • Huron — This is the main hamlet of Huron, once known as "South Huron." It's found where County Roads 155 and 156 meet.
  • Lake Bluff — A hamlet by the northeast part of Sodus Bay, along County Road 154.
  • LeRoy Island (also called "Long Island") — An island in the eastern part of Sodus Bay, close to the mainland.
  • Lummisville — A hamlet located northwest of Huron village, on County Road 155.
  • Mudge Creek — An important stream that flows north into Lake Ontario, ending in East Bay.
  • Newark Island (also called "Little Island") — An island in Sodus Bay, near the western town line.
  • North Huron — A hamlet north of Huron village, at County Road 156. It's next to a wide part of Mudge Creek.
  • Port Bay — A small bay partly located in the northeast corner of the town.
  • Resort — A hamlet on Sodus Bay and County Road 143, which used to be called "Port Glasgow."
  • Rice Mill (formerly "Rices Settlement") — A hamlet southeast of Huron village on County Road 155, by Mudge Creek.
  • Shaker Heights — A community on the southwest shore of Sodus Bay.
  • Sunset View — A hamlet on the eastern shore of Sodus Bay.
  • York — A hamlet in the southwest corner of the town.
  • York Settlement — A location near the southern town line, east of York.
