Hurricane Bob was a strong storm, called a hurricane, that hit the southeastern United States in July 1985. It was the second big storm and the first hurricane of the 1985 Atlantic hurricane season. Bob started as a "tropical wave" (a low-pressure area) in the eastern Gulf of Mexico on July 21.

Bob first moved east and hit southwestern Florida as a weak tropical storm. Then, it turned north and grew much stronger, becoming a hurricane by July 24. The next day, it made landfall near Beaufort, South Carolina. Bob was one of six hurricanes that hit the United States that year, which was a record. The storm quickly lost power over land. It was later absorbed by a weather system over eastern West Virginia on July 26.

Hurricane Bob caused about $20 million in damage. Sadly, five people also died because of things related to the storm.

Bob's Journey and Impact

Starting in Florida

In Florida, Hurricane Bob brought a lot of rain. In Everglades City, over 20 inches (500 mm) of rain fell. This rain was actually helpful for most areas. The region had been very dry throughout the year, so the water was much needed.

Hitting South Carolina

When Bob made its final landfall in South Carolina, the damage was not very severe. The storm had weakened a bit by then.

Effects in Virginia

In Virginia, the hurricane caused three tornadoes. One of these tornadoes was strong enough to destroy two houses.
