Ice Age is a fun computer-animated comedy film that came out in 2002. It was directed by Chris Wedge and Carlos Saldanha. This movie was the first big film made by Blue Sky Studios. 20th Century Fox released it on March 15, 2002.

The film features the voices of famous actors like Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, and Denis Leary. Ice Age takes place during the ice age. It follows three main characters: Manny, a grumpy woolly mammoth; Sid, a silly ground sloth; and Diego, a clever saber-tooth tiger. They find a human baby and work together to return it to its family. You'll also meet Scrat, a "saber-toothed squirrel" who is always trying to bury his acorn.

Ice Age was first planned as a 2D cartoon. But it became Blue Sky Studios' first full computer-animated movie. The creators changed the story from an action-adventure to a funny comedy. Many writers helped make the movie witty and entertaining.

When Ice Age was released, most people really liked it. It was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The movie made over $383 million, which was a huge success! This led to the popular Ice Age movie series.

The Story of Ice Age

The movie starts with Scrat, a saber-toothed squirrel. He is trying to bury his acorn for winter. But he accidentally causes a giant crack in the ice. This leads to a huge avalanche! Scrat barely escapes, but then a herd of animals steps on him. These animals are moving south to avoid the coming ice age.

Sid, a clumsy ground sloth, gets left behind by his family. He decides to travel alone. But two big rhinos attack him after he messes up their meal. Luckily, Manny, a woolly mammoth, saves Sid. Manny is heading north and prefers to be alone. But Sid decides to follow Manny anyway.

Meanwhile, Soto, the leader of a saber-tooth tiger pack, wants revenge. Humans killed half of his pack. Soto plans to capture the human chief's baby, Roshan. Roshan's mother tries to escape with her son. She jumps down a waterfall. Soto's tiger, Diego, is sent to find the baby. If he fails, he will be in big trouble.

Later, Sid and Manny find Roshan's mother. She is dying from the fall. She gives Roshan to Manny before she passes away. Sid convinces Manny to return the baby. When they reach the human camp, it is empty. They meet Diego, who offers to help track the humans. But Diego is secretly leading them to his pack's ambush spot.

The group has many adventures on their journey. They find a cave with cave paintings. Here, Sid and Diego learn about Manny's sad past. Human hunters killed his family, making Manny a lonely mammoth.

As they get closer to the ambush, they face a river of lava. Manny, Sid, and Roshan cross safely. But Diego almost falls into the lava. Manny saves him, risking his own life. That night, Roshan takes his first steps towards Diego. This makes Diego start to change his mind about his mission.

The next day, Diego tells Manny and Sid about the ambush. He has respect for Manny now. The herd fights Soto's pack. Soto corners Manny. Diego jumps in the way and gets hurt. Manny then knocks Soto into a rock wall. Sharp icicles fall, killing Soto instantly. The rest of the tiger pack runs away.

Manny and Sid think Diego is dying. They continue their journey without him. They successfully return Roshan to his tribe. To their surprise, Diego shows up, alive! He joins them to see Roshan leave. The group then travels together to warmer places.

Twenty thousand years later, Scrat is frozen in ice. He ends up on a tropical island. His acorn washes away as the ice melts. Scrat finds a coconut and tries to bury it. This accidentally causes a volcano to erupt!

Meet the Characters

The characters in Ice Age are all prehistoric animals. They can talk and understand each other. Famous actors lend their voices to these characters. Even though the movie shows many different animals together, some of them didn't actually live at the same time or in the same places in real life!

The Ice Age Video Game

A tie-in video game was made for the movie. It was developed by Artificial Mind and Movement. Ubisoft published it for the Game Boy Advance. In this platform game, you control Sid and Manny. You guide them through 10 levels while carrying Roshan.

The Ice Age Movie Series

After the first Ice Age movie, many sequels followed!

With five movies, the Ice Age series became the first animated movie franchise to have so many films in theaters. Even though some critics didn't love the later movies as much, they were all very successful at the box office! Two holiday specials were also released: Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas (2011) and Ice Age: The Great Egg-Scapade (2016). There were also seven Ice Age short films released between 2002 and 2016.
