Inlet is a small and friendly town located in Hamilton County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 355 people lived here. This was a small increase from 333 people in 2010.

The town's name, "Inlet," comes from its location. It sits at the eastern end of Fourth Lake. This lake is part of the famous Fulton Chain of Lakes. Inlet is found on the western edge of Hamilton County.

History of Inlet

The area around Inlet started to grow in the mid-1800s. Many people who enjoyed outdoor sports, like hunting and fishing, visited the area. It became known as the "Inlet on Fourth Lake."

In 1901, the town of Inlet was officially created. It was formed from the northern part of the town of Morehouse. For a short time in 1901, Inlet even became a small village, but it later went back to being a town.

Exploring the Inlet Area

Inlet has been a popular spot for tourists visiting the Adirondack Park for over 100 years. The town is surrounded by more than one million acres (about 400,000 hectares) of land within the park. This huge area is easy for visitors to explore.

A famous book called An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser has a connection to Inlet. The book was based on a real event from 1906. The story mentions a place called Arrowhead, which is now Arrowhead Park in Inlet. The book was later made into a movie called "A Place in the Sun." It starred famous actors like Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor.

Geography of Inlet

Inlet covers a total area of about 66.37 square miles (171.9 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 62.20 square miles (161.1 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 4.17 square miles (10.8 square kilometers), is water.

The western border of Inlet is also the border of Herkimer County. The Moose River forms the southern edge of the town.

New York State Route 28 is the main road that goes through Inlet. It runs from east to west and is the only major highway in the town. The beautiful Fulton Chain Lakes also stretch across Inlet and into nearby areas.

Neighboring Towns and Areas

Inlet shares its western border with the towns of Ohio and Webb. These towns are located in Herkimer County. To the south of Inlet is the town of Morehouse.

The town of Long Lake borders Inlet to the north and part of the east. The town of Arietta forms the southern part of Inlet's eastern border.

Lakes and Communities in Inlet

Inlet is home to many beautiful lakes and small communities. Here are some of them:

  • Bug Lake – A lake located north of Seventh Lake.
  • Browns Tract Pond – A small lake on the northern edge of town. It has a state-run campground nearby.
  • Cascade Lake – A lake found in the northern part of the town.
  • Eagle Bay – A small community in Herkimer County, right on Inlet's western border.
  • Eagles Nest Lake – A lake located north of Seventh Lake.
  • Eighth Lake – This is one of the Fulton Chain of Lakes. There are no private homes here because the whole lake is part of the state forest preserve. You can find a state campground between Seventh and Eighth Lake.
  • Fifth Lake – Another lake that is part of the Fulton Chain Lakes, located near Inlet.
  • Fourth Lake – A very large lake shared by Inlet and Herkimer County. It is the biggest of the eight Fulton Chain Lakes. Most of its shore has private homes, but some parts are state forest preserve. There is a public boat launch in the hamlet of Inlet.
  • Inlet – This is the main community in the town. It's located at the eastern tip of Fourth Lake, near the western town line, and is on NY-28. Here you can find gift shops, a grocery store, restaurants, a bike shop, a hardware store, a bookstore, a hotel, town offices, and a public park on Fourth Lake.
  • Limekiln Lake – A lake south of Inlet, split by the western town line. It also has a state campground.
  • Lower Browns Tract Pond – A lake located northeast of Inlet.
  • Sixth Lake – A small lake east of Inlet. Many seasonal homes, called "camps," are along its shore.
  • Seventh Lake – This lake is east of Sixth Lake and is connected by a narrow channel, so boats can easily pass between them. Seventh Lake is the second largest of the Fulton Chain Lakes. Half of its shoreline is state forest preserve, and the other half has private homes. There's a state boat launch near the east end of the lake.
  • Upper Browns Tract Pond – A lake located northeast of Inlet.
