"It's About Time!" is an episode from the first season of the animated TV show Phineas and Ferb. It first aired on Disney Channel on March 1, 2008. Later, it was shown on Toon Disney on October 12, 2008. In this episode, stepbrothers Phineas and Ferb find a broken time machine. They fix it and travel back to prehistoric times. Meanwhile, Perry the Platypus faces a challenge. He finds that Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz has a new animal rival: a panda bear.
"It's About Time!" was written and directed by one of the show's creators, Dan Povenmire. Many artists helped create the storyboards for the episode. The writers decided to leave the time machine working at the end of the episode. This allowed them to use it again later in the series. They did this in the season 2 episode, "Phineas and Ferb's Quantum Boogaloo." Most critics liked the episode. Many praised the funny relationship between Perry and Doofenshmirtz.

Plot Summary
Time Travel Adventure
Stepbrothers Phineas Flynn and Ferb Fletcher visit a museum. There, they find an old, broken time machine. It was built way back in the 1880s. The boys decide to fix it so they can travel through time. Their sister, Candace, sees what they are doing. She wants to tell their mom, Linda, to get them in trouble. When Candace finally gets Linda to follow her, Linda gets distracted. Candace keeps walking towards the boys. Just then, their time machine turns on!
Phineas, Ferb, and Candace are sent back to the Late Cretaceous Period. This was a time with dinosaurs, about 66 to 100 million years ago. A Tyrannosaurus rex quickly destroys their time machine. Now, they are stuck in the past! The three friends have to run away from the T. rex. Luckily, a group of large Alamosaurus dinosaurs save them. These gentle giants were relaxing in a big pond.
Perry's New Rival
Meanwhile, Perry the Platypus goes to Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz's secret hideout. There, he finds out Doofenshmirtz has a new enemy. It's a panda bear named Peter, whom Doofenshmirtz met in Seattle. Perry feels sad and left out. He remembers all his past battles with Doofenshmirtz. Doofenshmirtz also starts to get tired of Peter. He realizes Peter isn't as interesting or sympathetic as Perry.
Perry and Doofenshmirtz decide to appear on a talk show called Dr. Feelbetter. On the show, they agree to become enemies again. But Doofenshmirtz then reveals his true plan. The whole situation was a trick! He wanted to capture the world's best secret agents. These agents were sitting in the audience. Doofenshmirtz tries to freeze them with a giant ray. This leads to a big battle, and the agents win!
Returning to the Present
The boys and Candace return to a muddy area in the past. The T. rex left a huge footprint there. They realize this footprint will be in the museum in their own time. Phineas leaves a message in the footprint. It's for Isabella and the Fireside Girls. He asks them to save them.
In the present, the girls quickly spot the footprint and the message. They use their handbook to build a new time machine. They travel back in time to rescue Phineas, Ferb, and Candace. When they arrive back in the present, they notice something. The T. rex came back with them! Candace runs off to show her parents the dinosaur. But a stray ray from Doofenshmirtz's machine freezes the creature. So, her parents just think it's a new museum exhibit.
Making the Episode
Writing and Storyboards

The idea for "It's About Time!" came from the four main writers of the series. They had a meeting and decided the idea was good enough to make into an episode. Dan Povenmire, one of the show's creators, wrote the script. At the same time, artists Jon Barry, Mike Roth, Kent Osborne, and Aliki Theofilopoulos drew the episode's storyboards. These storyboards are like a comic book version of the episode. The team would review the storyboards. Their reactions helped decide if certain jokes would stay in the final episode. Povenmire also directed the episode. The animation was done in South Korea at Rough Draft Studios.
Time Machine's Future
At the end of the episode, Phineas and Ferb's time machine is still working. It's left at the museum, ready to be used again. The writers planned this on purpose. They wanted to use the time machine in future episodes. Eventually, they came up with an idea. Phineas and Ferb would go into the future. They would see Candace as an adult. This would bring up old memories for her about not being able to "bust" them. This idea was used in the second season episode, "Phineas and Ferb's Quantum Boogaloo."
Music in the Episode
"It's About Time!" features two songs: "My Nemesis" and "When We Didn't Get Along." During the storyboard stage, the team simply noted where a song should go. Like most songs in the series, these were written by the show's co-creators, Povenmire and Jeff "Swampy" Marsh. They usually wrote a song in about an hour. Povenmire and Marsh would then sing their song draft into the answering machine of the show's composer, Danny Jacob. Jacob then performed both songs for the episode.
Release and Availability
The episode first aired in the United States on the Disney Channel on March 1, 2008. "It's About Time!" was later included on the DVD called Phineas and Ferb: The Fast and the Phineas. This DVD came out in 2008. It also featured other first season episodes. These included "One Good Scare Ought to Do It!", "The Fast and the Phineas," "Lawn Gnome Beach Party of Terror," "Flop Starz," "Raging Bully," "Lights, Candace, Action!" and "Are You My Mummy?" Both songs from the episode, "My Nemesis" and "When We Didn't Get Along," were released in 2009. They were part of the official Phineas and Ferb soundtrack.
