Jackson is a city in Missouri, United States. It is the main city of Cape Girardeau County. Jackson is also the county seat, which means it's where the county government is located. It's part of a larger area called the Cape Girardeau–Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 2020, about 15,481 people lived in Jackson. The city is named after Andrew Jackson, who was a popular general and later became a U.S. President.

History

Early Days of Jackson

In 1813, the area around Jackson became Cape Girardeau County. A new main office for the county government was needed. So, in 1814, land was bought along Hubble Creek to create a new county seat.

The first post office opened in 1814. Back then, the area was called Birdstown. On August 31, 1819, its name was changed to Jackson. This was to honor Andrew Jackson, who was a famous general from the War of 1812. Jackson was actually the first town ever named after him! The town's layout was planned in 1815. By 1818, about 300 people lived there. The first county courthouse was built in 1818 in Jackson's main square.

Growth and Challenges

Jackson grew quickly at first, but its economy developed slowly. The town faced tough times. In 1833, a serious illness called Cholera spread, causing many deaths. It happened again in 1852, making many people leave town until the sickness passed.

Despite these challenges, Jackson continued to develop. A bank opened in 1841. Flour mills were built in 1855 and 1873. The American Civil War also affected the town. In 1861, a small fight happened near Jackson between soldiers from the Union Army and the Confederate Army.

In 1877, Jackson got its first long-distance railway service, connecting it to Cape Girardeau. By 1884, Jackson's population had grown to 2,105 people. The town had about 50 businesses. In the same year, people voted to officially make Jackson a city. The first courthouse burned down in 1870. The current courthouse was built in 1908. It stands in the center of Uptown Jackson, where Jones Drug Store has been serving the community since 1871.

Several historic places in Jackson are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Big Hill Farmstead Historic District, the Abraham Byrd House, the Frizel-Welling House, the Jackson Uptown Commercial Historic District, and the McKendree Chapel.
