Discovering Jamestown's Past
Jamestown was first settled a long time ago, in the 17th century. People called Huguenots, who were French Protestants seeking religious freedom, came to live here.
In 1706, the area became known as St. James Santee. It was the very first parish (a church district) of the Church of England outside of Charleston in Carolina.
Exploring Jamestown's Location
Jamestown is found in the northeastern part of Berkeley County. It's located about 1 mile (1.6 km) south of the Santee River. This river is an important natural feature nearby.
U.S. Route 17 Alternate runs through the town. This road can take you east to Georgetown or west to Moncks Corner. Moncks Corner is the main town for Berkeley County.
South Carolina Highway 41 also goes through Jamestown. It leads south to Mount Pleasant, which is close to Charleston. Going north on Highway 41 will take you to Andrews.
The town of Jamestown is also located within the Francis Marion National Forest. This means it's surrounded by beautiful natural areas.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Jamestown covers about 0.61 square miles (1.6 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area within the town limits.

Jamestown's Fun Events
Every year, Jamestown hosts a special event called the Hell Hole Swamp Festival. It takes place on the first full weekend in May. This festival is a big family event with lots of fun activities for everyone.

A special race called the 10k Gator Run began in 1976. It's known as the oldest road race in South Carolina. Winners of this race get unique trophies: real alligator heads!
