Jared Christopher Cannonier (born March 16, 1984) is an American professional mixed martial artist. He is known for competing in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He currently fights in the Middleweight division. As of February 4, 2025, he is ranked #7 among UFC middleweight fighters.

Jared Cannonier's Fighting Journey
Starting His Career
Jared Cannonier began his amateur mixed martial arts (MMA) journey in early 2011. He won his first two fights by knockout. In June 2011, he had his first professional MMA fight in Alaska. Over the next five years, he fought several times and built a perfect record of 7 wins and 0 losses.
Joining the UFC
First Fights (2015-2016)
In October 2014, Cannonier joined the UFC. His first UFC fight was on January 3, 2015, against Shawn Jordan. This was a Heavyweight fight, and Cannonier lost in the first round.
After a break, Cannonier returned on April 10, 2016, to fight Cyril Asker. He won this fight by knockout with elbows and punches. This win also earned him his first Performance of the Night bonus award.
Cannonier then moved to the Light Heavyweight division. On December 3, 2016, he faced Ion Cuțelaba. Cannonier won by a unanimous decision. This exciting fight also earned both fighters a Fight of the Night bonus.
Moving Up (2017-2018)
On February 11, 2017, Cannonier fought Glover Teixeira. He lost this fight by unanimous decision. Later that year, on July 7, he fought Nick Roehrick and won by TKO in the third round.
In December 2017, Cannonier faced Jan Błachowicz and lost by unanimous decision. On May 19, 2018, he fought Dominick Reyes and lost by TKO in the first round.
Cannonier then decided to move down to the Middleweight division. On November 3, 2018, he fought David Branch. Cannonier won this fight by technical knockout in the second round. This impressive win earned him another Performance of the Night award.
Big Wins (2019)
On May 11, 2019, Cannonier faced former UFC Middleweight champion Anderson Silva. He won the fight by TKO in the first round after a strong kick to Silva's leg.
Cannonier then fought Jack Hermansson on September 28, 2019. He won this fight by TKO in the second round. This victory earned Cannonier his third Performance of the Night bonus.
Challenges and Comebacks (2020-2022)
In 2020, Cannonier was scheduled to fight Robert Whittaker, but the fight was postponed. Cannonier later suffered a torn pectoral muscle, which kept him out of action for several months.
He eventually faced Robert Whittaker on October 24, 2020, and lost by unanimous decision. After the fight, Cannonier shared that he had broken his arm during the fight.
In 2021, Cannonier was set to fight Paulo Costa, but Costa withdrew. Kelvin Gastelum stepped in, and Cannonier won their fight by unanimous decision on August 21, 2021.
On February 12, 2022, Cannonier fought Derek Brunson. He won by knockout in the second round, earning another Performance of the Night bonus. This win was a big step towards a championship fight.
Cannonier then challenged Israel Adesanya for the UFC Middleweight Championship on July 2, 2022. He lost the championship fight by unanimous decision.
Later in 2022, Cannonier was scheduled to fight Sean Strickland. After a delay, they fought on December 17, 2022. Cannonier won the fight by split decision.
Recent Fights (2023-2025)
On June 17, 2023, Cannonier faced Marvin Vettori. Cannonier won by unanimous decision. In this fight, he set a new record for the most significant strikes landed in a UFC middleweight bout, with 241 strikes. This fight also earned him a Fight of the Night bonus.
In October 2023, Cannonier had to withdraw from a scheduled fight due to an MCL tear in his knee.
On June 8, 2024, Cannonier fought Nassourdine Imavov. He lost this fight by technical knockout in the fourth round.
Cannonier then faced Caio Borralho on August 24, 2024. He lost the fight by unanimous decision, but it was another exciting match that earned him a Fight of the Night award.
On February 15, 2025, Cannonier fought Gregory Rodrigues. He won the fight by technical knockout in the fourth round, earning another Fight of the Night award.
Cannonier is scheduled to fight Michael Page on August 16, 2025.
Personal Life
Before becoming a professional fighter, Jared Cannonier served in the United States Army. He left the army after three years of service due to a rule violation. He then worked in Alaska before signing with the UFC.
