Jason Wu (Chinese: 吳季剛; pinyin: Wú Jìgāng; born September 27, 1982) is a famous Canadian artist and fashion designer. He lives and works in New York City. Jason was born in Taiwan and grew up in Vancouver, Canada. He is best known for designing clothes for Michelle Obama. She wore his designs many times, including for the important events when her husband, Barack Obama, became President of the United States.

Jason Wu's Early Life and Design Journey

Jason Wu was born in Yunlin County, Taiwan. When he was nine years old, his family moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He went to different schools, including Eaglebrook School and Loomis Chaffee. For his last year of high school, he studied in France.

Jason learned to sew by making clothes for dolls. He even studied sculpture in Tokyo. When he was sixteen, he started designing doll clothes for a toy company called Integrity Toys. He created lines like "Jason Wu dolls" and "Fashion Royalty." The next year, he became the main designer for Integrity Toys. After high school, he decided to become a fashion designer. He then studied at the Parsons The New School for Design in New York City.

Jason Wu's Career in Fashion

Jason Wu started his own clothing line using money he earned from designing dolls. His first fashion collection came out in 2006. In 2008, he won the Rising Star award from the Fashion Group International.

Jason's early customers included famous people like Ivana Trump and January Jones. He also designed six dolls for the famous drag queen RuPaul.

From 2013 to 2018, Jason Wu was the art director for the German fashion company Hugo Boss. He was in charge of all their women's clothing.

In 2013, Wu launched a new clothing line called Miss Wu. This line was for younger people and cost less. Michelle Obama even wore a Miss Wu dress in 2012 before it was available in stores. In 2016, he relaunched the line as Grey. He even worked with Pantone to create a special grey color just for his brand.

In 2020, Jason Wu started a line of makeup and skincare products called Jason Wu Beauty. These products are known for being "clean," meaning they use natural ingredients.

Designing for Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama is a very important customer for Jason Wu. She is the wife of former US President Barack Obama. She was introduced to Jason by André Leon Talley, a well-known editor from Vogue Magazine.

Michelle Obama bought four dresses from Jason Wu early in 2008. She wore one of them on a TV show before the election. This made many people think she helped launch his career. She wore another special dress by Jason Wu for the balls on the night of President Barack Obama's first inauguration. It was a long, white dress with one shoulder.

Michelle Obama also wore a Jason Wu design on the cover of Vogue magazine. When she visited London in 2009, she wore a bright green dress and a coat designed by Wu. She even wore a Wu coat when she met Queen Elizabeth II.

In 2013, Michelle Obama wore another beautiful dress by Jason Wu. It was a red velvet and chiffon design for the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Balls.
