Jaylen Marselles Brown (born October 24, 1996) is an American professional basketball player. He plays for the Boston Celtics in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Before joining the NBA, he played one year of college basketball for the California Golden Bears. He was named the best freshman player in his conference.
The Celtics chose Jaylen Brown as the third overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft. He plays as a shooting guard and small forward. Jaylen Brown has been selected for the NBA All-Star team four times. He helped the Celtics reach the Eastern Conference finals six times. In 2024, he led the Celtics to win the NBA Finals. He was also named the Finals MVP for his amazing performance.

High School Basketball Journey
Jaylen Brown went to Wheeler High School in his hometown. As a junior, he scored about 24 points and grabbed 8 rebounds per game. He helped his team, the Wildcats, win 29 games that season.
In his senior year, Jaylen led his team to win the Georgia State Championship. He made two important free throws with less than a second left to win the game 59–58. He had many great games, including one with 28 points and 11 rebounds. He also scored 25 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 assists against a team with future NBA star Ben Simmons. In his senior year, Jaylen averaged 28 points and 12 rebounds. His team finished with an impressive 30–3 record.
Jaylen also won a gold medal with the USA Basketball Men's U18 National Team in 2014. He was chosen to play in the 2015 McDonald's All-American Boys Game. By the end of high school, he was named Georgia's best player.
Becoming a Top Recruit
Many experts considered Jaylen Brown a top player for college. Scout, ESPN, and 247Sports ranked him as the fourth best recruit in 2015. Rivals.com ranked him third.
On May 1, 2015, Jaylen decided to play for the Golden Bears. He joined coach Cuonzo Martin at the University of California, Berkeley. Jaylen was known for his great athletic skills.

College Life and Basketball
While at Berkeley, Jaylen Brown took a special class about sports and culture. He also started learning Spanish. He wanted to learn three more languages by the time he was 25.
Playing for the Golden Bears in the 2015–16 season, Jaylen averaged 14.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. He scored a career-high 27 points twice. He also had 11 rebounds in two different games. In one game, he had 7 assists along with 15 points. He was named the best freshman player in the Pac-12 Conference.
Professional Basketball Career
Joining the Boston Celtics (2016–Present)
Rookie Season (2016–17)
On June 23, 2016, the Boston Celtics picked Jaylen Brown as the third overall player in the 2016 NBA draft. He signed his first contract with the Celtics on July 27. In his first NBA game on October 26, 2016, he scored 9 points. In his first start on November 3, he scored 19 points. On January 27, 2017, he scored a career-high 20 points.
Jaylen helped the Celtics become the top team in the Eastern Conference. They reached the Eastern Conference Finals. The Celtics lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers in five games. Jaylen had a good first year, playing well off the bench. He averaged 6.6 points and 2.8 rebounds. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team.
Sophomore Season (2017–18)
In the 2017 NBA draft, the Celtics also drafted Jayson Tatum. Jaylen and Jayson, often called the "Jays," played their first game together on October 17, 2017. Jaylen scored a career-high 25 points in that game. On November 18, he scored 27 points, helping the Celtics win their 15th straight game. On April 6, he set a new career-high with 32 points.
In the playoffs, Jaylen scored 30 points in Game 2 against the Milwaukee Bucks. At 21, he became the youngest Celtic to score 30 points in a playoff game. He later scored a career-high 34 points in Game 4. The Celtics won that series. They then won their next series against the Philadelphia 76ers. Jaylen scored 24 points in the game that clinched the series. The Celtics reached the Eastern Conference Finals. They lost to the Cavaliers in seven games.
Challenges and Growth (2018–19)
Jaylen Brown had a tough start to the 2018–19 season. Some people criticized his playing. However, he improved as the season went on. On December 6, 2018, he scored 21 points after missing three games. Two days later, he scored 23 points in a big win. On December 31, he scored a season-high 30 points.
Breakthrough Season (2019–20)
In October 2019, Jaylen signed a new four-year contract with the Celtics. On December 28, 2019, he tied his career-high with 34 points. He almost made the 2020 NBA All-Star Game. In the playoffs, the Celtics reached the Eastern Conference Finals for the third time in his career. They beat the Philadelphia 76ers and Toronto Raptors. However, they lost to the Miami Heat in six games.
First All-Star Selection (2020–21)
On December 30, 2020, Jaylen scored a career-high 42 points. On February 24, 2021, he was chosen for his first NBA All-Star team. On April 15, he scored 40 points against the Los Angeles Lakers. His season ended early due to wrist surgery.
First NBA Finals Appearance (2021–22)
On October 20, 2021, Jaylen scored a career-high 46 points in the first game of the season. This set a Celtics record for points on opening night. On January 2, 2022, he scored an even higher career-high of 50 points. Six days later, he achieved his first triple-double with 22 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists. He and Jayson Tatum often scored 30 points or more in the same game. They broke a Celtics record held by Larry Bird and Kevin McHale.
In the playoffs, Jaylen scored 30 points in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. He scored a playoff career-high 40 points in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals. The Celtics won that series and reached the 2022 NBA Finals for the first time since 2010. Jaylen scored 24 points in Game 1 of the Finals. He had 27 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists in Game 3. The Celtics lost the series in six games, even with Jaylen scoring 34 points in the final game.
All-NBA Team Selection (2022–23)
On December 2, 2022, Jaylen scored 37 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. He made a long three-pointer to send the game into overtime. On December 13, he had a season-high 15 rebounds. On January 11, 2023, he scored a season-high 41 points. This was his fifth game with 40 or more points. On February 2, he was named to his second NBA All-Star Game. On March 13, he scored a season-high 43 points.
In the playoffs, Jaylen scored 29 points and 12 rebounds in Game 1. He and Jayson Tatum both scored 31 points in Game 4. The Celtics reached the Eastern Conference Finals again. They lost to the Miami Heat in seven games.
NBA Champion and Finals MVP (2023–24)
On July 25, 2023, Jaylen Brown signed a huge five-year contract extension. It was the largest deal in NBA history at the time. He earned this "supermax" contract after being named to the All-NBA Second Team.
On January 22, 2024, Jaylen recorded his third career triple-double. On February 1, he was named to his third All-Star Game. On March 7, he scored a season-high 41 points. He also reached 10,000 career points on April 7.
In the Eastern Conference Finals, Jaylen scored 26 points and made a key three-pointer to send Game 1 into overtime. Two days later, he tied his playoff career-high with 40 points. The Celtics swept the Indiana Pacers in four games. Jaylen was named the Eastern Conference Finals MVP. He averaged almost 30 points per game in that series.
In the 2024 NBA Finals, Jaylen had 22 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks in Game 1. In Game 3, he scored 30 points, 8 rebounds, and a playoff career-high 8 assists. He became only the second Celtic to have such a game in the Finals. He and Jayson Tatum also set a record for most 25+ point games by a Celtics duo in playoff history. The Celtics won the series in five games, becoming NBA champions. Jaylen Brown was named the Finals MVP for his outstanding play. He averaged 20.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.0 assists. He also played great defense on Luka Dončić.
Recent Season (2024–25)
On December 27, 2024, Jaylen scored a season-high 44 points. This was his 11th career game with 40 or more points. On January 30, 2025, he was named an NBA All-Star for the fourth time. He finished the regular season with a career-best 4.5 assists per game.
In the playoffs, Jaylen played through a knee injury. He averaged 22.1 points and 7.1 rebounds. The Celtics were eliminated by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Even though Jayson Tatum was injured, Jaylen played very well. He had 26 points, 8 rebounds, and a playoff career-high 12 assists in Game 5. He had knee surgery in June 2025 and is expected to be fully recovered.

Jaylen Brown's Life Outside Basketball
Jaylen Brown is mostly a vegetarian. He has many interests beyond basketball. These include learning Spanish, studying history, practicing meditation, and playing musical instruments. He also enjoys watching anime. Many people describe Jaylen as a unique athlete with many goals outside of sports.
Before the NBA draft, Jaylen chose to have an advisory team made up mostly of African-Americans. He decided not to hire a traditional agent. Some people worried he was "too smart" for the NBA. They thought he might get tired of basketball and want to do other things.
At 22, Jaylen became the youngest elected vice president of the National Basketball Players Association. He has spoken at Harvard University and MIT about the importance of education and technology. He also spoke at his old college, Berkeley. In 2019, he became a fellow at the MIT Media Lab. He worked with MIT to create the Bridge Program. This program helps young people of color in the Greater Boston area. It guides them if they are interested in careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Through his work, Jaylen is very interested in helping with education and income inequality.
He was offered an internship at NASA. He was also the youngest person to give a lecture at Harvard. He was even in a robotics class when he found out he had signed the largest contract in NBA history.
Jaylen has a YouTube channel where he shares videos about his life. The first video was called "FCHWPO: Pawn to E4." This title shows his love for chess. FCHWPO is also his social media name. It stands for "Faith, Consistency, Hard Work Pays Off."
Jaylen is a practicing Muslim. He converted in 2021. In June 2024, he went on a pilgrimage to Mecca, called an Umrah.
Family and Relationships
Jaylen's father, Marselles, is a professional boxer. He was a world champion in 2016. Jaylen's grandfather, Willie Brown, was also a boxer. Jaylen is the cousin of former professional football player A. J. Bouye.
In 2024, Jaylen was seen with WNBA player Kysre Gondrezick at the Celtics' championship parade. He later called her "my date" at the ESPY Awards.
