Jaylen Marselles Brown (born October 24, 1996) is an American professional basketball player. He plays for the Boston Celtics in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played one year of college basketball for the California Golden Bears. There, he was named the best freshman player in the Pac-12 Conference.
After his first year in college, Brown joined the 2016 NBA draft. The Celtics chose him as the third overall pick. As a professional, he plays as a shooting guard and small forward. Jaylen Brown has been an NBA All-Star three times. He has also helped the Celtics reach the Eastern Conference finals six times. In 2024, he led the Celtics to win the NBA championship. He was also named the Finals MVP for his amazing performance.

High School Basketball Career
Jaylen Brown went to Wheeler High School in his hometown of Marietta, Georgia. In his junior year, he scored about 24 points and grabbed 8 rebounds per game. He helped his team, the Wildcats, win 29 games.
As a senior, Brown led his team to win the state championship. He made two free throws with less than a second left to win the game 59–58. In that year, he averaged 28 points and 12 rebounds. He also helped Wheeler High School win 30 games.
Brown won a gold medal in 2014 with the USA Basketball Men's U18 National Team. He was also chosen to play in the 2015 McDonald's All-American Boys Game. By the end of high school, he was named Georgia's best player by several groups.
Choosing a College
Many experts thought Brown was one of the top basketball recruits in 2015. On May 1, 2015, Brown decided to play for the Golden Bears. This was at the University of California, Berkeley. He joined coach Cuonzo Martin and another top recruit, Ivan Rabb. Brown was known for being a very athletic player.
College Basketball Career
While playing for the Golden Bears in the 2015–16 season, Brown played 34 games. He averaged 14.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. His best scoring games were 27 points against Richmond and Utah. He also had a season-high 11 rebounds twice.
Brown showed his all-around skills with seven assists in a close win against Arizona. He earned top honors in the Pac-12 Conference. He was also named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year.
Professional Basketball Career
Boston Celtics (2016–present)
2016–17 Season: Rookie Year
On June 23, 2016, the Boston Celtics picked Jaylen Brown as the third overall player in the 2016 NBA draft. He officially signed with the Celtics on July 27. In his first games, he averaged 16 points and 6.2 rebounds.
Brown played his first NBA game on October 26, 2016. He scored nine points in a win against the Brooklyn Nets. In his first start on November 3, he scored 19 points. On January 27, 2017, he scored a career-high 20 points against the Orlando Magic.
Brown helped the Celtics become the top team in the Eastern Conference. They reached the Eastern Conference Finals. Brown had a good first year, playing 78 games and starting 20. He averaged 6.6 points and 2.8 rebounds. He was also named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team.
2017–18 Season: Sophomore Year
In the next season, Brown and Jayson Tatum became a strong duo for the Celtics. On October 17, 2017, Brown scored a career-high 25 points in the first game. On November 18, he scored 27 points, helping the Celtics win their 15th game in a row.
On April 6, Brown set another career-high with 32 points against the Chicago Bulls. In the playoffs, he scored 30 points in a game against the Milwaukee Bucks. At 21, he became the youngest Celtic to score 30 points in a playoff game. He later scored 34 points in another playoff game. The Celtics reached the Eastern Conference Finals but lost in seven games.
2018–19 Season: Challenges
Brown had a tough start to the 2018–19 season. Some people thought he was not focused enough. On December 6, 2018, he returned from an injury and scored 21 points. Two days later, he scored 23 points in a big win. On December 31, Brown scored a season-high 30 points.
2019–20 Season: Big Improvement
In October 2019, Brown signed a large contract extension with the Celtics. On December 28, 2019, he tied his career-high with 34 points. He almost made the 2020 NBA All-Star Game.
In the playoffs, the Celtics reached the Eastern Conference Finals for the third time. They beat the Philadelphia 76ers and Toronto Raptors. However, they lost to the Miami Heat in six games.
2020–21 Season: First All-Star Selection
On December 30, 2020, Brown scored a career-high 42 points. On February 24, 2021, he was chosen for his first NBA All-Star team. On April 15, Brown scored 40 points against the Los Angeles Lakers. His great season ended early because he needed wrist surgery.
2021–22 Season: First NBA Finals Appearance
On October 20, 2021, Brown scored a new career-high of 46 points. This was a Celtics record for an opening night. On January 2, 2022, he scored an amazing 50 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Six days later, he got his first "triple-double" (scoring double digits in three different stats) with 22 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists.
Brown and Jayson Tatum often scored over 30 points in the same game. They broke a Celtics record held by Larry Bird and Kevin McHale. In the playoffs, Brown scored 40 points in a game against the Miami Heat. He helped the Celtics reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 2010. They lost to the Golden State Warriors in six games.
2022–23 Season: All-NBA Team
On December 2, 2022, Brown scored 37 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. He made a long three-pointer to send the game into overtime. On December 13, he had 25 points and a season-high 15 rebounds. On January 11, 2023, Brown scored 41 points and 12 rebounds.
On February 2, Brown was named to his second NBA All-Star Game. On March 13, he scored a season-high 43 points. On March 26, Brown had 41 points and 13 rebounds. The Celtics reached the Eastern Conference Finals again, but lost to the Miami Heat.
2023–24 Season: NBA Champion and Finals MVP
On July 25, 2023, Brown signed a huge five-year contract. It was the largest deal in NBA history at the time. On January 22, 2024, Brown got his third triple-double. On February 1, he was named to his third All-Star Game. On March 7, Brown scored a season-high 41 points and 14 rebounds. He also reached 10,000 career points on April 7.
In the Eastern Conference Finals, Brown scored a clutch three-pointer to send Game 1 into overtime. Two days later, he scored a playoff career-high 40 points. The Celtics swept the Indiana Pacers in four games. Brown was named the Eastern Conference Finals MVP for his amazing play.
In the 2024 NBA Finals, Brown continued to shine. He had 22 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks in Game 1. In Game 3, he scored 30 points, 8 rebounds, and a playoff career-high 8 assists. He and Jayson Tatum became the first Celtics duo to have 30+ points, 8+ rebounds, and 8+ assists in an NBA Finals game. The Celtics won the series in five games. Jaylen Brown was named the Finals MVP for his outstanding performance.

About Jaylen Brown's Life
Jaylen Brown is mostly a vegetarian. He has many interests outside of basketball. These include learning Spanish, history, meditation, and philosophy. He also enjoys playing musical instruments and watching anime. Many people say Brown is a unique athlete with big goals beyond sports.
Brown is African-American. He chose to have an advisory team made mostly of African-Americans. He did not hire a traditional agent when he entered the NBA draft. Some people worried he was "too smart" for the NBA. They thought he might get bored with basketball and try other careers.
At 22, Brown became the youngest vice president of the National Basketball Players Association. He has spoken at places like Harvard University and MIT. He talks about how important education and technology are. In 2019, Brown became a fellow at MIT Media Lab. He works with MIT on the Bridge Program. This program helps young people of color in Boston interested in STEM careers (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Through his work, Brown focuses on helping with education and income inequality.
He was offered an internship at NASA. He was also the youngest person to give a lecture at Harvard. He was even in a robotics class when he found out he got the biggest contract in NBA history!
Brown has a YouTube channel. He posts videos about his life during the season and his workouts. His first video, "FCHWPO: Pawn to E4," came out in 2017. The title shows his love for chess. "FCHWPO" is also his social media name. It stands for "Faith, Consistency, Hard Work Pays Off."
Brown became a practicing Muslim in 2021. In June 2024, he went on a pilgrimage called an Umrah to Mecca.
Family and Relationships
Jaylen Brown's father, Marselles, is a professional boxer. He was a world champion in 2016. His grandfather, Willie Brown, was also a boxer. Jaylen Brown is also the cousin of former professional football player A. J. Bouye.
In 2024, Brown was seen with WNBA player Kysre Gondrezick. He called her "my date" at the ESPY Awards.
