Jean-Marc's Professional Boxing Career
Jean-Marc Mormeck started boxing as an amateur in 1990. He became a professional boxer in 1995.
Starting Out: 1995–1998
Early in his career, Mormeck lost two short four-round fights. But after that, he kept winning for many years. On November 10, 1998, he won the French light-heavyweight title. He beat Alain Simon by a unanimous decision. He defended this title three times before giving it up.
Becoming a World Champion: 2002–2006
Jean-Marc Mormeck won his first major title in 2002. He became the WBA cruiserweight champion. He won by a technical knockout against Virgil Hill in the ninth round. He defended his WBA title three times. He beat Dale Brown, Alexander Gurov, and Virgil Hill again.
On April 2, 2005, he added the WBC cruiserweight title to his collection. He won against Wayne Braithwaite by a unanimous decision. This meant he held both the WBA and WBC titles.
However, Mormeck lost his WBA and WBC cruiserweight titles on January 7, 2006. He was knocked out in the tenth round by O'Neil Bell. This fight was for the undisputed (WBA/WBC/IBF) cruiserweight championship.
Winning Back the Titles: 2007
Jean-Marc Mormeck fought O'Neil Bell again on March 17, 2007. This time, Mormeck won back his WBA and WBC titles. He won by a unanimous decision.
In his first defense of these titles, Mormeck faced David Haye. On November 10, 2007, Mormeck lost his WBA, WBC, and lineal cruiserweight titles. Haye knocked him down in the seventh round. Mormeck got up, but the referee stopped the fight. David Haye won by knockout.
Moving to Heavyweight: 2009–2010
After a two-year break, Mormeck returned to boxing on December 17, 2009. He decided to fight as a heavyweight for the first time. He won an eight-round fight against Vinny Maddalone.
On December 2, 2010, Mormeck fought Timur Ibragimov. Mormeck won by a split decision. This win helped him move up in the heavyweight rankings.
Challenging for the Heavyweight Title: 2012
In October 2011, Mormeck was set to fight Wladimir Klitschko. Klitschko was the unified Heavyweight Champion. The fight was first planned for December 10, 2011. But it was postponed to March 3, 2012, because Klitschko had a kidney stone.
In this big fight, Mormeck tried to become only the third cruiserweight champion to win a world title at heavyweight. Only Evander Holyfield and David Haye had done this before. However, Mormeck was defeated by knockout in the fourth round.
Returning to Cruiserweight and Retiring
After another long break, Mormeck returned to the ring in June 2014. He fought Tamas Lodi and won. After the match, Mormeck said he was tired of boxing. He wanted one more title shot before ending his career.
Instead, he fought Mateusz Masternak, a former European champion. Mormeck lost this fight by a majority decision. As he had said he would, Jean-Marc Mormeck retired from boxing after this defeat.
