Jeffrey Peter Hart (born February 23, 1930 – died February 16, 2019) was an American writer and professor. He was known for sharing his thoughts on culture and society. He taught English at Dartmouth College for many years. He also wrote for several important magazines and newspapers.

Jeffrey Hart's Life and Work

Jeffrey Hart was born and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He first studied at Dartmouth College. Later, he moved to Columbia University. There, he earned two degrees in English literature. He got his Bachelor of Arts (AB) in 1952 and then his PhD.

Military Service

During the Korean War, Jeffrey Hart served in the United States Navy. He worked in intelligence in Boston. This means he helped gather and understand important information for the Navy.

Teaching at Dartmouth College

After a short time teaching at Columbia, Hart became a professor at Dartmouth College. He taught English literature there for 30 years, from 1963 to 1993. He was an expert in literature from the 18th century. He also really liked modern literature.

Hart was very popular with his students. He made them do a lot of writing, which helped them learn. He sometimes disagreed with his fellow professors on political ideas. For example, when they worried about fossil fuels, he would drive a large Cadillac limousine to campus. He even used a mechanical hand to drum on the table if faculty meetings went on for too long!

Writing and Politics

In 1962, Jeffrey Hart started writing for National Review. This was a well-known conservative magazine founded by William F. Buckley. He reviewed books for them. This meant he traveled from Hanover, New Hampshire to New York City every other week. For about 30 years, he was a writer and senior editor for the magazine. He did this while also teaching at Dartmouth.

In 1968, Hart took a break from teaching at Dartmouth. He worked on the presidential campaign for Ronald Reagan. Reagan was the Governor of California at the time. This work led to a short job as a White House speechwriter for President Richard Nixon.

Awards and Recognition

Jeffrey Hart received several awards for his work. In 1992, he won Dartmouth College's Outstanding Teaching Award. His former student, Reggie Williams, nominated him for this honor. In 1996, he also received the Young America's Foundation Engalitcheff Prize. These awards recognized his excellent teaching and contributions.

In 1980, a student newspaper called The Dartmouth Review was started in his living room. He continued to advise this paper for many years. He also wrote a regular column for King Features Syndicate, which is a company that distributes articles to many newspapers.

Later Political Views

In his later years, Jeffrey Hart began to criticize some policies of President George W. Bush. He wrote about his views in magazines like American Conservative and Washington Monthly. He also wrote for The Wall Street Journal. Interestingly, he supported John Kerry in the 2004 election. He also supported Barack Obama in 2008.

Jeffrey Hart passed away on February 16, 2019. He died just one week before his 89th birthday.
