Early Life and Growing Up
Jessie James Decker was born Jessica Rose James on April 12, 1988. She was born in Vicenza, Italy, on an American military base. Her mother is Karen Johnson, and her father is Robert James. Her stepfather, Steve Parker, was in the U.S. Air Force. Because of this, Jessie lived in many different states like Iowa, Kentucky, Texas, Louisiana, and Georgia. She finished high school in Warner Robins, Georgia, in 2007.
Jessie has two younger siblings, Sydney Rae Bass and John James. She also has two stepsiblings, Ashley and Alex Parker.
Jessie started singing when she was only two years old. She won her first talent show at age nine in Baker, Louisiana. She sang "I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart" at the contest. By then, she was already writing songs on a toy guitar. She performed at places like SeaWorld and in Warner Robins, Georgia. When she was 15, she traveled to Nashville every week to improve her songwriting.
Music Career Journey
When Jessie was 17, she met Carla Wallace from Big Yellow Dog Music. Carla helped her with her songwriting and singing. One of Jessie's songs, "Gypsy Girl," reached music executive David Massey. He then introduced her to L.A. Reid. Jessie sang her song "My Cowboy" for Reid, and soon after, she signed a contract with Mercury Records.
First Album and Style
Jessie originally thought she would make a country music album. However, her record company asked her to record a pop album instead. They even asked her to sound like pop singer Britney Spears. Jessie described making the album as "intense" because it mixed different music styles. She said she was "a country girl at heart" because she grew up listening to country music.
Her first album, Jessie James, came out in August 2009. It reached number 23 on the Billboard 200 music chart. The album blended country and pop music, but her label focused more on the pop sound. Jessie helped write some of the songs on the album. Critics had mixed feelings about the album. Some liked it, but others felt it wasn't truly country music. The album's first song, "Wanted", was released in April and became a top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
After her album came out, Jessie performed for U.S. troops overseas in the Middle East. She performed with singer Kid Rock and comedian Carlos Mencia.
Later Music and EPs
In 2010, Jessie started working on her second album, Sweet American Dreams. It was planned to have a country-pop sound, and Jessie had more freedom to add country elements. The first song from it, "Boys in the Summer," was a small success in country music. However, Jessie told her label that she wanted to be a country artist, not a pop artist.
After talking with her label, Jessie started recording country music in 2011. She released songs like "When You Say My Name" in 2012 and "Military Man" in 2012. In 2013, she left Show Dog Universal.
Jessie released an extended play (EP) called Comin' Home in April 2014. This EP reached number one on the iTunes album chart. It also debuted in the top 5 on Billboard's top country albums chart.
In 2016, Jessie was featured on a song called "Howlin'" by Austin John. She also finished her "Lights Down Low" tour. In February 2017, she released another five-song EP called Gold. In June 2017, she surprised fans with a live EP called Blackbird Sessions. Her second full-length album, Southern Girl City Lights, was released in October 2017.
In April 2022, Jessie sang "America the Beautiful" at WWE's WrestleMania 38 event in Dallas, Texas. In November 2023, she performed "Tangled in Tinsel" live at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
TV Shows and Fashion
In 2013, Jessie starred with her husband, Eric Decker, in the E! reality TV show Eric & Jessie: Game On. The show ran for three seasons and had 20 episodes.
In September 2022, Jessie was a contestant on season 31 of Dancing with the Stars. She danced with Alan Bersten and finished in 10th place.
Jessie also started her own clothing line called Kittenish. Kittenish has stores in Nashville, Tennessee, and near Destin, Florida.
Music Style and Inspirations
Jessie helped write most of the songs on her first album. Her music mixes country, pop, and soul sounds. For her song "Blue Jeans," the beat was made from a recording of Jessie stepping. This is a type of dance she learned from her school's step team.
When she was trying to get a music contract in Nashville, some people didn't like her soul music-inspired singing style. Jessie has said that singers like Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Bobbie Gentry, Janis Joplin, Shelby Lynne, and Shania Twain have inspired her music. She wanted a career like Gentry and Twain, who were successful in both country and pop music.
Family Life
On June 22, 2013, Jessie married Eric Decker. At that time, Eric was an NFL wide receiver for the Denver Broncos. They have four children together.
