Making the Show
Puppets and People Behind the Scenes
This TV show used amazing puppets. They were made by Jim Henson's Creature Shop. This is the same company that created the Muppets! The show also had talented puppeteers. These included Mike Quinn, Mak Wilson, and Karen Prell. They brought many characters to life. Angie Passmore played Mother Goose herself.
Story Ideas
Many of the stories came from a book. It was called Mother Goose in Prose. This book was written by L. Frank Baum in 1897. He also wrote The Wonderful Wizard of Oz! Other stories in the show were brand new. The characters in the show looked a lot like the drawings by Maxfield Parrish. He was the artist who illustrated Baum's book.
When and Where It Aired
The show was first made in the United Kingdom. It was a team effort between The Jim Henson Company and Television South West. It first aired on Children's ITV in the UK in 1988. A test episode about "Humpty Dumpty" was made in 1987.
The show later came to the United States. It started on The Disney Channel on August 25, 1990. This was the first new TV series from Jim Henson's company after he passed away.
Show Format and Directors
Mother Goose Stories had three seasons. There were 39 short episodes, each about eight minutes long. When they aired on The Disney Channel, three short stories were put together. This made one half-hour episode. Each story had its own opening and closing credits. The show stayed on The Disney Channel until 1993.
Brian Henson directed the first and third seasons. This was one of his first directing jobs for The Jim Henson Company. Michael Kerrigan directed the second season. Brian Henson and Michael Kerrigan even won an Daytime Emmy Award! They won for their excellent directing of a children's program.
