Goikoetxea is best known for his time at FC Barcelona. He played there during the club's famous Dream Team years. He played in 386 La Liga matches and scored 37 goals over 13 seasons. Goikoetxea also played for the Spanish national team in the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

Goikoetxea's Club Journey

Starting at Osasuna

Goikoetxea was born in Pamplona, Spain. He grew up playing for his hometown club, CA Osasuna. He made his first appearance in La Liga, Spain's top football league, just before his 20th birthday. This was in a match against RC Celta de Vigo. He quickly became a key player for Osasuna. In the 1987–88 season, he scored 11 goals. This was his best scoring season, and Osasuna finished fifth in the league.

Time with Real Sociedad

After his success at Osasuna, Goikoetxea signed with the big club FC Barcelona. However, he was immediately loaned out for two years. He went to Real Sociedad, a team close to Osasuna. This loan was part of a deal that also involved Txiki Begiristain and José Mari Bakero. They moved from Real Sociedad to Barcelona. Goikoetxea played almost every league game during his two years at Real Sociedad. His team finished fifth again in the 1989–90 season.

Joining Barcelona's Dream Team

In the 1990–91 season, Goikoetxea finally joined Camp Nou, Barcelona's home stadium. He joined other players from the Basque region, like Begiristain, Andoni Zubizarreta, Julio Salinas, and Bakero. These players became the core of Barcelona's famous Dream Team. This team won four league titles in a row.

They also won the club's first European Cup in 1992. Goikoetxea played in the second half of the final match, which Barcelona won 1–0 against UC Sampdoria. He also scored the winning goal in the European Super Cup that followed. They won this trophy against SV Werder Bremen.

In his first season with Barcelona, Goikoetxea played 37 matches. He was even voted the Spanish Footballer of the Year by Don Balón magazine.

Later Career and Retirement

In the summer of 1994, Goikoetxea moved to another Basque team, Athletic Bilbao. He played 112 matches for them. He retired from playing football in 1999. Before retiring, he had a short time playing for Yokohama Marinos in Japan. There, he played again with his former teammate, Julio Salinas. He also returned to CA Osasuna for a final spell, playing in the second division.

Coaching Career

Six years after retiring as a player, Goikoetxea started coaching in 2005. He often worked as an assistant coach under his former teammate, José Ángel Ziganda. They worked together at Xerez CD during the 2009–10 season. However, they left the club in early 2010 because of poor results.

Playing for Spain: International Career

Goikoetxea played 36 times for the Spanish national team over six years. He represented Spain at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States. His first game for Spain was on September 12, 1990. It was a friendly match, and Spain won 3–0 against Brazil.

During the 1994 World Cup, Goikoetxea played in all of Spain's matches. He scored two goals in two different games. One goal was in a 2–2 draw against South Korea. The other was in a 1–1 draw against Germany. In the game against Germany, his shot surprised the German goalkeeper, Bodo Illgner.
