Goikoetxea's Club Career
Goikoetxea was born in Pamplona, a city in Spain. He started his football journey in the youth teams of his hometown club, CA Osasuna. He played his first game in La Liga just before his 20th birthday. This was in a match against RC Celta de Vigo, which Osasuna lost 2–0.
He quickly became a regular player for Osasuna. In the 1987–88 season, he scored 11 goals, which was his best scoring year. Osasuna finished fifth in the league that season.
Playing for Barcelona and Real Sociedad
After his time at Osasuna, Goikoetxea signed with the big club FC Barcelona. However, he was immediately loaned out for two years to Real Sociedad. This was a deal that also involved other players like Txiki Begiristain and José Mari Bakero. They moved from Real Sociedad to Barcelona.
While on loan, Goikoetxea played almost every league game for Real Sociedad. He helped them finish fifth in the league again in his second season.
In the 1990–91 season, Goikoetxea finally joined FC Barcelona at their home stadium, Camp Nou. He joined many other players from the Basque region of Spain. These players included Begiristain, Andoni Zubizarreta, Julio Salinas, and Bakero. They all became key players in Barcelona's famous "Dream Team."
This team won four league titles in a row! They also won the club's first European Cup (now known as the UEFA Champions League). Goikoetxea played in the second half of the final match, which Barcelona won 1–0 against UC Sampdoria. He also scored the winning goal in the UEFA Super Cup against SV Werder Bremen.
Goikoetxea played 37 matches in his first season with Barcelona. He was even voted the Spanish Footballer of the Year by Don Balón magazine. In the summer of 1994, he moved to another Basque team, Athletic Bilbao. He played 112 matches for them.
Later Career and Coaching
Goikoetxea retired from playing football in 1999. Before retiring, he had a short time playing for Yokohama Marinos in Japan. There, he played with his former teammate Julio Salinas again. He also returned to Osasuna for a short period, when they were in the second division.
Six years later, Goikoetxea started his coaching career. He worked as an assistant coach under his former teammate José Ángel Ziganda. They worked together at Xerez CD during the 2009–10 season. However, they left the club in early 2010 because of poor results.
Goikoetxea's International Career
Goikoetxea played 36 times for the Spanish national team over six years. He represented Spain in the 1994 FIFA World Cup. His first game for Spain was on September 12, 1990. It was a friendly match against Brazil, which Spain won 3–0.
During the 1994 World Cup in the United States, Goikoetxea played in all of Spain's matches. He scored two goals in two different games. One goal was in a 2–2 draw against South Korea. The other was in a 1–1 draw against Germany. In the game against Germany, his cross towards the goal accidentally went in, surprising the German goalkeeper Bodo Illgner.
