Jon Fortt (born December 12, 1976) is an American journalist. He is a co-anchor for CNBC's Closing Bell Overtime show. Before this, he was a co-anchor for TechCheck.
Jon Fortt also created and hosts "Fortt Knox." This is a special show and podcast about technology, leadership, and new ideas. It started in 2016 and is now mainly found on LinkedIn. On "Fortt Knox," he has interviewed many important people. These include business leaders like Michael Dell and Satya Nadella, and even famous athletes like Michael Phelps. In 2021, he started a weekly part of CNBC's "Power Lunch" called "Working Lunch." This part shares clips from his "Fortt Knox" interviews. In 2020, he also created "On the Other Hand" for CNBC's "Squawk Box." In this segment, he discusses two different sides of a business or technology topic. In November 2024, he was named one of The Root 100. This list features 100 influential Black Americans.
Early Life and School
Jon Fortt was born on Long Island, New York. His family later moved to Washington, D.C.. He went to Montgomery Blair High School there. In high school, he was the president of the Student Government Association. He helped organize protests to get a new school built.
In his last year of high school, he won a special scholarship for journalism. He then went to DePauw University. There, he was part of an honors program for media. He worked at the student newspaper, The DePauw, and became its editor. He earned a degree in English Writing. In May 2022, he gave the graduation speech at DePauw University. He joined DePauw's board of trustees in October 2022.
Jon Fortt's Career
After college, Jon Fortt started his career at the Lexington Herald-Leader newspaper in Lexington, Kentucky. In 1999, he began writing about technology. Later that year, he moved to California. He joined the San Jose Mercury News newspaper in San Jose, California. In 2006, he became a senior editor at Business 2.0 magazine.
In 2007, he started working for Fortune magazine. He was a senior writer covering big companies. These included Apple Inc., Hewlett-Packard, and Microsoft. Jon Fortt joined CNBC in 2010. He worked as a technology reporter from Silicon Valley.
In 2013, he moved to the main CNBC offices. In 2021, he joined the board of the National Summer Learning Association. This is a non-profit group.
