Jonathan Hyde, whose full name is Jonathan Stephen Geoffrey King, was born on May 21, 1948. He is an actor from Australia. He is well-known for playing different characters in popular movies and TV shows. Some of his most famous roles include Herbert Arthur Runcible Cadbury in Richie Rich (1994) and Samuel Parrish/Van Pelt in Jumanji (1995). He also played J. Bruce Ismay in the epic film Titanic (1997) and Dr. Allen Chamberlain in The Mummy (1999). Even though he is Australian, he has mostly lived in the United Kingdom since 1969.

Becoming an Actor
Jonathan Hyde was born in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. When he was younger, he was interested in law and even started studying it at university. However, he loved acting and theatre more.
In 1969, he moved to London to follow his dream. He got a spot at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), which is a very famous acting school. When he graduated in 1972, he won the Bancroft Gold Medal. This award is given for excellent performance. Jonathan Hyde has said that he did not try to lose his Australian accent when he moved to Britain. He mentioned that it still "comes and goes."

Jonathan Hyde has been in many well-known movies and television series. He is famous for playing characters that are sometimes serious or even a bit scary.
In the adventure film Jumanji, he played two roles: Samuel Parrish and the hunter Van Pelt. He was also in the huge movie Titanic, where he played J. Bruce Ismay, who was the managing director of the White Star Line. Another big role was Dr. Allen Chamberlain in The Mummy.
He also appeared in the comedy movie Richie Rich as Herbert Arthur Runcible Cadbury. On TV, he played Eldritch Palmer in the FX series The Strain from 2014 to 2017. He also voiced Walt Strickler in the animated series Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia.
Jonathan Hyde has also been in several mystery shows. He played Culverton Smith in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes and Frank Smythe-Webster in Midsomer Murders.
Theatre Work
Jonathan Hyde is a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, which is a very famous theatre group. He has performed in many classic plays.
He played Ferdinand in The Duchess of Malfi in 1985. He also performed in The Seagull as Dr. Dorn and King Lear as the Earl of Kent in 2007. These plays toured around the world before playing in London. He even played Kent again in a TV movie version of King Lear in 2008.
In 2011, he was in the final series of the BBC show Spooks, playing a Russian Minister named Ilya Gavrik. He also played Lionel Logue, the speech therapist, in the play The King's Speech in London's West End.
In 2019, he was nominated for an Olivier Award for his role as Beau in the play Gently Down The Stream.
Personal Life
Jonathan Hyde married Scottish opera singer Isobel Buchanan in 1980. They have two daughters together. One of their daughters, Georgia King, is also an actress.

Jonathan Hyde has a long history of performing in plays. He has worked with several famous theatre companies.
With the Glasgow Citizens' Theatre
He performed in many plays with the Glasgow Citizens' Theatre in the 1970s. Some of his roles included Casanova in Camino Real and Polonius in Hamlet. He also played Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest.
With the Royal Shakespeare Company
Jonathan Hyde has been a key member of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). He played Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet and Edgar in King Lear. He also took on the role of Brutus in Julius Caesar. More recently, he played Kent in King Lear and Dorn in The Seagull for the RSC in 2007.
