Josep Maria Subirachs i Sitjar (born March 11, 1927 – died April 7, 2014) was a famous Spanish sculptor and painter. He lived in the late 1900s. His most well-known artwork is probably the Passion Façade of the Sagrada Família church in Barcelona. This part of the church was a bit controversial. Subirachs chose a very different style from the original architect, Antoni Gaudí.

Subirachs also created special lettering designs in Barcelona. These designs were even shown in Eye magazine.

From a young age, Josep Maria Subirachs showed great talent. He was not just a sculptor. He was also a painter, an engraver, and a designer for theater sets. He even gave lectures and wrote about art. He always wanted to be an architect, and you can see that in his work.

He created art projects all over the world. He used many different styles in his work. These included the Mediterranean style, Expressionism, Abstract art, and a style called new figuration.

  • He was a member of the Reial Acadèmia Catalana de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi in Barcelona. This is a special art academy.
  • He was a corresponding member of the Hispanic Society of America in New York.
  • He received the Creu de Sant Jordi from the Generalitat de Catalunya. This is a very high honor in Catalonia.
  • He was given a medal from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
  • He was made an Officier in l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres of France. This is an award for contributions to the arts.
  • He was named "Personnalité de l'Année 1987" (Personality of the Year 1987) in Paris.
  • He was a member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid.
  • He received the Medalla de Honor from the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel, Hungria.

An asteroid discovered in 2005 was even named after him! It is called 134124 Subirachs.
