Early Life and Inspiration
Julie Taymor was born in Newton, Massachusetts. Her mother was a professor, and her father was a doctor who studied fertility. Julie became interested in theatre at a very young age. By the time she was ten, she was already acting in plays with the Boston Children's Theatre. She was often the youngest person in her theatre groups.
When she was 15, her parents sent her on trips to Sri Lanka and India. After high school, at 16, she went to Paris to study at L'École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq. There, she learned about mime, which is a type of acting without words. She also started working with masks for the first time. These experiences helped her develop her unique visual style. She also watched many films by famous directors like Fellini and Kurosawa.
In 1970, Julie went to Oberlin College in Ohio. During her studies, she learned about Indonesian topeng masked dance-drama and wayang kulit shadow puppetry. These traditional art forms had a big impact on her future work. She graduated from Oberlin College in 1974.
After college, Julie traveled to Japan and Indonesia. From 1975 to 1979, she lived in Indonesia. There, she started a mask and dance company called Teatr Loh. This group included actors, musicians, dancers, and puppeteers from many different countries. They performed their original shows all over Indonesia. In 1980, she met Elliot Goldenthal, who would become her long-time partner and collaborator.
