Kamal Rani Varun (born 3 May 1958 – died 2 August 2020) was an Indian politician. She served as a Cabinet Minister in the government of Uttar Pradesh. She was also a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly and the Lok Sabha, which is part of India's national parliament.
Early Life and Education
Kamal Rani was born on 3 May 1958 in Lucknow, which is in Uttar Pradesh, India. She married Kishan Lal Varun on 25 May 1975. Her husband was a volunteer for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, a well-known organization.
Kamal Rani had one daughter. She went to Kanpur University and earned a Master's degree in sociology. Sociology is the study of how people live together in groups and societies.
Political Career
Kamal Rani Varun started her political journey in 1989. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chose her to run in the local city elections in Kanpur. She won and became a councillor for the Kanpur Municipal Corporation. This meant she helped manage the city's affairs.
She won again in 1995. In 1996, the BJP selected her to run for a seat in the Lok Sabha from the Ghatampur area. The Lok Sabha is like the lower house of India's national parliament. She won this election and was re-elected in 1998.
However, in the 1999 election, she lost by a small number of votes. While she was a Member of Parliament, she worked on important committees. These committees looked at issues like workers' rights, community well-being, businesses, women's rights, and tourism.
Later, Kamal Rani tried to win a seat in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 2012 but was not successful. However, in the 2017 elections, she won the seat for the Ghatampur area. She received a large number of votes, about 48.52%.
On 21 August 2019, the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath chose her to be a minister in the state government. She became the only woman minister in Uttar Pradesh at that time.
Death and Legacy
Sadly, Minister Kamal Rani became sick with COVID-19 on 18 July 2020. She was taken to a hospital. She also had other health conditions like diabetes and hypertension (high blood pressure). She passed away on 2 August 2020, at 9:30 AM, due to problems from the illness. She was 62 years old.
Many important leaders shared their sadness about her death. The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, cancelled a trip to show his respect. The national flag was flown at half-mast (lower than usual) in her honor. This is a way to show respect for someone who has died.
The President Ram Nath Kovind and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi also sent their condolences. The state government declared 2 August a day of mourning for her. Her funeral was held in Kanpur, and a guard of honour was present to show respect for her service.
