Karlheinz Böhm (born March 16, 1928 – died May 29, 2014) was an actor from Austria and Germany. He was also a kind person who helped others, known as a philanthropist.
He acted in 45 movies. Many people in Austria and Germany knew him for playing Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria in the Sissi movie series. Around the world, he was known for his role as Mark in the movie Peeping Tom, directed by Michael Powell.
Karlheinz Böhm started a charity called Menschen für Menschen. This name means "Humans for Humans." His charity helps people in need, especially in Ethiopia. Because of his great work, he was made an honorary citizen of Ethiopia in 2003. Böhm passed away at his home in Grödig, Austria, at 86 years old. He had Alzheimer's disease.

Early Life and Education
Karlheinz Böhm was born on March 16, 1928, in Darmstadt, Germany. His father was Karl Böhm, a famous conductor from Austria. His mother was Thea Linhard, a singer born in Germany. Karlheinz was their only child.
He spent his childhood in different German cities like Darmstadt, Hamburg, and Dresden. In Hamburg, he went to elementary school and a grammar school called Kepler-Gymnasium.
In 1939, when World War II was starting, he moved to Switzerland. He went to a boarding school there called Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz. In 1946, he moved with his parents to Graz, where he finished high school.
Karlheinz first wanted to be a pianist. However, he didn't get good feedback when he tried out. His father then encouraged him to study English and German languages. He also studied art history for one semester in Rome. But he soon left his studies and went back to Vienna to take acting lessons.
Karlheinz Böhm's Acting Career
In the early 1960s, Karlheinz Böhm worked in American movies and TV shows. He played Jacob Grimm in the movie The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm. He also played Ludwig van Beethoven in the Walt Disney film The Magnificent Rebel. This Disney film was made for the TV show Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color. Later, it was shown in movie theaters in Europe.
He also played a bad guy in the movie Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1962). In this film, he was the son of Paul Lukas and supported the Nazis. This movie was a new version of an old silent film from 1921.
Karlheinz Böhm also used his voice for acting. In 1975, he narrated his father's recording of Peter and the Wolf. This famous musical story was written by Sergei Prokofiev. In 2009, he provided the German voice for Charles Muntz. This was the villain in the animated movie Up by Pixar.
Helping Others: Charitable Work
In November 1981, Karlheinz Böhm started his charity, Menschen für Menschen. This means "Humans for Humans." He spent most of his time helping people in Ethiopia. He largely stopped acting in the 1980s to focus on this important project.
His charity has done amazing things. They have built over 400 schools and 2,000 water fountains. More than 5 million people have been helped by their work.
In 2003, Karlheinz Böhm was given honorary Ethiopian citizenship. This was to thank him for his efforts. In 2007, he received the Balzan Prize for "Humanity, Peace and Brotherhood among Peoples." In 2011, Karlheinz Böhm and his wife Almaz received the Essl Social Prize. This award was for their great work with the Menschen für Menschen project.
