Karrinyup is a suburb in Perth, the main city of Western Australia. It is about 12 kilometers north of Perth's city center. This area is part of the City of Stirling local government.

Karrinyup's History

The name Karrinyup comes from the word Careniup. This was a Noongar Aboriginal name for a nearby swamp. It likely means "the place where bush kangaroos graze". Some also think it means "the place where spiders are".

In the 1840s, Samuel Edward Moore received a large piece of land here. This land was about 780 acres (3.2 square kilometers). A map from 1844 showed a big swamp nearby called Careniup Swamp.

In 1929, a group building the Lake Karrinyup Country Club golf course decided to change the spelling to Karrinyup.

The area was divided into smaller blocks in 1904. But for a long time, the golf club was the only main feature. Karrinyup started to grow quickly in 1957. The southern part of the suburb developed first. Back then, the only way to get to Karrinyup from Perth was by specific roads. The Mitchell Freeway was built to Karrinyup Road in 1983-84. This helped Karrinyup and nearby Stirling become important areas.

About Karrinyup's Location

Karrinyup is surrounded by several roads and areas. North Beach Road is to the north. Marmion Avenue is to the west. Newborough Street is to the south. Huntriss Road and the country club are to the east.

About one-third of Karrinyup is made up of nature reserves or bushland. It also includes two golf courses. Karrinyup Road connects Marmion Avenue and West Coast Highway to the Mitchell Freeway.

In 2016, Karrinyup had about 9,283 people living there. Many houses in Karrinyup are quite new. However, because the area grew over many years, you can see different house styles. Most homes have two stories and are built with brick and tile.
